Review of switchable privacy display technologies for LCD and OLED displays
- Aug 05, 2025
- Yannick Bourgin
Displays are increasingly present in cars, and now the norm on mobile phones. Nevertheless, there are particular cases, where the content should remain invisible for security and/or confidentiality reasons, safe entertainment of the car´s co-driver while driving, and consumer electronics’ displays to protect various information from spying. siOPTICA GmbH develops and invents optical components for switchable privacy displays, where the content is either visible from limited viewing angles – privacy mode – or all viewing angles – public mode. Requirements typically include luminance, uniformity, constant color and cutoff angle where information is not visible for angles of incident larger than 25° in private. The presentation will focus on the applications and requirements for such displays. Then our two recently developed technologies (for LCD, and OLED/μLED) will be described, presenting optical designs, simulations and measurement results of our latest prototypes.
