L'article examine la non-utilisation de services de garde d'enfants avant les accords pancanadiens sur l'apprentissage et la garde de jeunes enfants intervenus entre le gouvernement fédéral et les gouvernements provinciaux et territoriaux et appuyés par un investissement fédéral de jusqu’à 30 milliards de dollars canadiens. À l'aide de données de l'Enquête sur les modes d'apprentissage et de garde des jeunes enfants de Statistique Canada recueillies en 2019 (avant la pandémie) et en 2020 (en cours de pandémie), l'auteure a mené des analyses de structure latente pour les raisons parentales de ne pas utiliser de services de garde et a cerné six typologies similaires de non-utilisation de services de garde pour les deux cohortes, plus une typologie de parents ayant à composer avec une pandémie en 2020. Certains parents ne semblaient pas désirer se prévaloir de services de garde (p. ex., parents choisissant de rester à la maison, parents accommodés par l’école, parents en congé du travail, parents au chômage). D'autres ont semblé ne pas avoir été en mesure de satisfaire leurs besoins en matière de services de garde, en raison d'obstacles liés aux frais des services ou de contraintes liées à la pandémie. L'auteure estime que la demande non satisfaite était équivalente à 201 858 enfants de moins de 6 ans (9 %) en 2019 et à 394 881 enfants (17 %) en 2020.

Gaps in quality population-inclusive health information for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) populations living in urban and related homelands persist. While most FNIM peoples in Canada now live in cities, urban populations are often excluded, hidden, misclassified, or under-represented in health information systems (HIS). This is of particular concern as accurate and inclusive Indigenous population-based health information is needed to adequately drive policy, and to sufficiently fund and evaluate urban services. Our Health Counts (OHC) (http:// www. welll iving house. com/ what-wedo/ proje cts/ our-health-counts/) aims to gather population health information regarding the health and health experiences of FNIM peoples living in cities. Community-owned models are necessary to achieving health equity for FNIM populations living in urban and related homelands: models founded on the principles of Indigenous self-determination, governance, and management of our respective HIS. Our Health Counts (OHC) methods are designed to respond to these gaps, and community research partnerships are central to the success of these projects. The articles * Marcie Snyder

Tony completed his PhD in three years at Imperial College (London) studying under Dr. R.W.B. Stephens. He then joined George Thiessen and Edgar Shaw at NRCC to form the core of what became arguably the most influential and productive research group in acoustics in Canada from the 1960s to the 1980s. An important activity was service to industry, a role Tony embraced by collaborating with industry associations, participating in committees and directing his research activities. Working with George Thiessen, he succeeded in reducing the noise of couch rolls, a major source of noise in paper making, by randomizing the pattern of holes through which air was sucked to dry the paper. Other successful noise control projects included staggered stator blades for gas turbine engines and mufflers for rock drills. Tony made seminal contributions to outdoor sound propagation and refined condenser microphone calibration. In addition to his research and outreach, he found time for professional service to the ASA and CAA, including serving as founding editor of what is now Canadian Acoustics, and to develop standards and mentor younger scientists, He is remembered for his cheerfulness and willingness to provide advice and engage in conversation on any and all topics.

In this article we discuss findings from a community based, participatory action research study. The aim was to understand how Indigenous youth describe, experience, manage pain and hurt and how they seek care. A critical analysis guided by Two-Eyed Seeing and Medicine Wheel frameworks highlighted important clinical strategies for Indigenous youth to balance their health and reduce pain. This study is a partnership project with an Aboriginal Health Centre in Southern Ontario and the Canadian Institute of Health Research funded Aboriginal Children's Hurt and Healing Initiative (ACHH). The study gathered perspectives of Indigenous youth, Elders, and health clinicians using conversation sessions guided by a First Nations doctoral student and nurse researcher. Using the medicine wheel framework three main thematic areas emerged across the three groups and include (1) Predictors of Imbalance; (2) Indicators of Imbalance; and (3) Strategies to re-establish balance health in relation to pain. The main strategy includes considerations for clinicians using the acronym LISTEN (Language, Individual, Share, Teachable moments, Engage, and Navigate) approach that outlines strategies for clinicians that will be a safe guide to manage pain and hurt.

Growth and yield models are an essential tool for predicting the long-term response of forests to management and disturbance. Model evaluation and calibration are challenging, however, given data limitations for observing stand structural changes with age across heterogeneous forest landscapes. Here we present an approach for calibrating the lodgepole pine (LP) forest model in the Central Rockies variant of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS-CR) using Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plot data from the US Forest Service. Previous evaluation showed the FVS-CR LP model is generally successful in reproducing known patterns of stand dynamics. However, the default model settings tend to result in unrealistic stand successional behavior and over-estimate the density, basal area, and especially carbon density of mature lodgepole pine forest stands as compared to expectations. Here we develop a generalized model calibration procedure based on simulating bare-ground re-growth of a single mixed lodgepole stand and comparing to a forest growth chronosequence constructed from FIA plot measurements in Colorado and Wyoming. We set parameters such as basal area increment and maximum tree size to match corresponding characteristics observed directly in the FIA plot data. The remaining ‘free’ parameters (notably small tree height increment and tree mortality parameters) were then tuned for best fit against the FIA chronosequence in terms of five different stand characteristics: live and dead basal area, trees per hectare, quadratic mean diameter, and average height. Improving model fit against all five stand characteristics simultaneously required substantial increases to mortality-related parameters, particularly for the shade-tolerant species present in mixed stands. These parameters had to be adjusted empirically rather than based on literature values, suggesting some underlying model structural challenges. However, the resulting recalibrated FVS-CR LP model achieves much better representation of expected lodgepole stand structure and successional behavior, and can more credibly be used to evaluate carbon storage outcomes for different forest management choices in the region.

The Giant Mine Remediation Project (Giant) and Faro Mine Remediation Project (Faro) are abandoned mine projects in northern Canada with long legacies and many complex challenges.BGC Engineering Inc. has been working with Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (CIRNAC) using holographic projections to collaborate with First Nations and local communities on key mine closure information.This paper shares experience with using Microsoft's mixed reality HoloLens devices (HoloLens) as a tool that creates a safe and equitable environment to collaboratively engage with communities where previous experience and technical understanding are not prerequisites to contributing.This is important, as engaging in meaningful discussions involving mine closure planning involves effectively communicating engineering and earth science information to rights holders and stakeholders with diverse experiences.The Faro project is beginning to develop several 3D digital models to encourage conversation, discussion, and engagement on the progress of mine closure, showcasing a time lapse of how the mine has changed over the past few years and its current state, and to explore the staged approach to reclamation.HoloLens was used to incorporate a broad spectrum of data into holographic models that were shared with multiple users to experience together.The digital models incorporated historical topographic and aerial imagery and current conditions, and include proposed future conditions based on designs and reclamation plans.The participants can collaboratively experience this collated information from different viewpoints, including in tabletop models, as 3D objects in the middle of the room, and as immersive 3D scenes.At Giant, there is a complex underground mining legacy that the community wanted to better understand.Holographic models were created that allow users to visualise and walk around the surface and underground together, as a community, and ask questions, voice concerns and ideas, and see how groundwater conditions change throughout the seasons and into the future.Additionally, as there are several locations throughout the mine that will be reclaimed based on input from the community, it is important to be able to visualise the design beyond 2D engineering-based drawings.Real-life-scale immersive views were created, providing experiences of how these areas might look once reclamation is finished.We hope that by sharing the experience of sharing information in this way that the state of practice for creating holistic and sustainable mine closure designs that reflect the input of rights holders and stakeholders can be advanced.

The Arctic is undergoing biological and environmental changes, and a coordinated effort to monitor is critical to detect these changes. The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme (CBMP) of the Arctic Council biodiversity working group, Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), has developed pan-Arctic biodiversity monitoring plans that aims to improve the ability to detect and report on long-term changes. Whilst introducing this special issue, this paper also presents the making of the terrestrial monitoring plan and discusses how the plan follows the steps required for an adaptive and ecosystem-based monitoring programme. In this article, we discuss how data on key findings can be used to inform circumpolar and global assessments, including the State of the Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity Report, which will be the first terrestrial assessment made by the CBMP. Key findings, advice for future monitoring and lessons learned will be used in planning next steps of pan-Arctic coordinated monitoring.
