Medicinal plants play a crucial role in African traditional medicine, particularly in Liberia, where they are used alongside Western medicine. For generations, traditional knowledge about plants utilization has empowered locals to develop a wide range of plant products to address the medical needs of their communities. Over time, this development has led to the emergence of trade in medicinal plants and plant products. The trade of medicinal plant products (MPP) significantly contributes to the local economy by providing income opportunities for many. This study was conducted in Margibi County with aims to profile the trade of MPP, their origins, peak sale times, and the socio-economic characteristics of traders. The research identified key participants in the supply chain as collectors, wholesalers, and retailers. Qualitative data was analyzed using narrative analysis. The study revealed that 34.375% of MPP originates from rural Margibi, 28.125% from Montserrado with the rest being from Bong, Grand Bassa, Nimba and Lofa counties. Women are the predominant traders in the MPP trade; representing 78.125% while men represent 21.875%. Businesses along the MPP supply chain earn low profit margins from the sale of these products due to several contributing factors. These factors include limited investment and inadequate record keeping of transactions. The study suggests policy initiatives should be put in place by relevant authorities to formalize the trade, and provide access to financial resources and services which are necessary to improving income levels and creating opportunities for greater investment in the MPP trade.

Due to the rise in microbial resistance to orthodox medicines, there is need for investigation towards the discovery of plants with potential pharmacological effects. Methanolic extracts of the leaves of four Solanum species were screened for their antimicrobial properties and for various biochemical analyses, using standard methods. S. melongena showed highest antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. The antifungal activity of S. gilo extract was the highest at 5 mg/ml against Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans. Antifungal activity of S. macrocarpon extract was observed as the highest at 25 mg/ml against Candida albicans. The promising antimicrobial potential of the investigated plants can be attributed to the presence of specific biochemical compounds detected in them by means of GC-MS profiling and other biochemical analyses. The study revealed that the four species of African eggplant are nutritionally and therapeutically valuable and can be further developed into medicinal products. Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. The joint effort to address malnutrition amongst school children in Liberia through Aquaponics particularly at the More Than Me Academy by the social work students at the AME University and the Extra curriculum Lead at Hilltop Schools came about when the nurse at the Academy started her regular malnutrition and deworming assessment where she discovered that 20% of the students in the elementary section were malnourished. Students of Social Work department doing Internship at the MTMA came together and brainstormed on ways of addressing this health deficiency crisis. The interns finalized that in other to address the malnutrition issues among the students, they will provide nutritious meal highlighted from the food pyramid. This effort aligns with goal two of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) which envision a zero hunger world, we later discussed about a more sustainable methods of ensuring that all the kids including the ones with malnutrition at the Academy continue having a healthy diet during their days in schools. From this discussion, we as students decided to embark on a garden project which will serve as the main source of nutrients that will matched that of the pyramid. How to cite this article using ASWNet styleSnorton, E. In recent times, conventional medicine has become less accessible to more people either due to affordability or lack of well-equipped health facilities. Foods, and vegetables inclusive contain naturally occurring prophylactics and therapeutics with different means of preparation and accessibility but not enough reports are available on them to educate especially the poor masses on how to turn normal foods into potential drugs to save them a lot of time and money. Malnutrition and starvation with associated health problems have become a global threat and there is a need to review and create more awareness on possible access to naturally grown foods that are loaded with biologically potential active nutrients. Nutraceuticals are a group of biochemicals that are found in food substances and provide potential physiological benefits. This group of compounds presents little or no side effects due to their natural ability compared to synthetic products. This topic is aimed to investigate the various active nutraceuticals that are obtainable in vegetable crop plants. It will also expound on the disease prevention and health benefits as well as the enhancement of the overall human wellness potentials provided by vegetable crops and nutraceuticals.

Considering the Liberian society as the contextual setting or background, this study interrogates protest votes as another form of political behavior. It employs the conceptual analysis approach categorized as one of the kinds of qualitative research methods. Using the frustration-aggression theory as its theoretical framework, the paper unveils the inherent peril or risk associated with protest votes unknown to registered voters. It sees protest votes as an emotional response due to the dissatisfaction with incumbent candidates to realize campaign promises. On the premise that frustration has the proclivity to affect logical reasoning, the paper equates dissatisfaction to frustration which has implications for protest votes. Based on this premise, which is empirical, the paper argues that evidenced by the clamor (“I am calling from the most abandoned district”, “2023 is coming”) ahead of the 2023 elections, the Liberian society might witness a cyclical or repeated phenomenon of previous election results prompting the increasing clamor. The paper concludes whether the argument proffered herein is empirical or not, it does not take away the fact that protest vote is an emotional decision of voters’ dissatisfaction. As an emotional response influenced by frustration, it has the proclivity to affect their judgment during elections. For this reason, the paper cautions those making the clamor to be mindful because the frustration behind the inclination may result in illogical judgment. And finally, the paper clarifies that this caution is not in any clever or smart way to support and endorse the reelection of the incumbent leadership or candidates.

We report on the detection by means of Raman spectroscopy of amorphous beryllium deuteride, BeD 2 , in magnetron sputtered deposits synthesized in two different laboratories and containing about 20 at.% of deuterium. In contrast, this signature has not been found for the JET limiter samples studied coming from the inner, outer or upper limiters, even when coming from a deposition zone of the limiters. We give a way to disentangle that BeD 2 signature from other signatures falling in the same spectroscopic range and mainly related to other phenomena. We also analyze the Raman characteristics of the JET sample defects. These results could help in the interpretation of D thermal desorption spectra and in future analyses of JET thick Be deposit divertor tiles.

We assess China’s investment patterns in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) using total investment data separated into foreign direct investment (FDI) and infrastructure investment in four separate groups of countries covering the period from 2005 to 2017. Answering four questions based on arguments by scholars on China’s involvement in the region, we find that: (a) FDI constitutes only about 27 percent of China’s total financial flows into SSA; (b) only 30 percent of the total financial flows from China to SSA have gone into the natural resource sector; (c) mineral-related investments in mineral-resource-endowed countries constitute less than one-third of the total investment; and (d) less than one-third of China’s total investment in the region is allocated to natural resource extraction. These findings seem to refute arguments that Chinese investments in Africa are directed at natural resource extraction and that only countries endowed with natural resources attract Chinese investments.
