In northeast Russia, the famous historic Kolyma Road spans two thousand kilometers across two federal subjects of the Russian Federation: the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and Magadan Oblast. Thousands of people live along and in close proximity to the road, depending on it for communication, mobility, goods, and life support. As the major transportation infrastructure in the entire region, it should be reliable and stable for local communities’ well-being. One strategic approach to ensure its reliability is to acknowledge the role of Indigenous knowledge, which has been neglected despite being established long before the emergence of existing formal systems of communication. Based on data collected through fieldwork, personal observations, and conversations, this paper aims to demonstrate that Indigenous knowledge regarding ways of living, moving, and communicating along and on the road is the key to sustainability in the region. As a result, we claim that this realization should be manifested in designing and implementing communication and mobility systems based on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In the long term, it is necessary to develop a sustainable road management system for the Kolyma Road to ensure the security and well-being of local communities and for everyone visiting and working on the road.

The starting point for this article is The Living North project conducted by the non-governmental organization Arctic Art Institute in Arkhangelsk, Russia, in 2019–21. The project team digitized archives of the crafts factory, Belomorskie Uzory (‘The White Sea patterns’), for the first time and through art-based participatory research revealed the existing challenges of the industry, communicating marginalized knowledge and creating new social choreographies. The case of reviving tacit knowledge and re-creating narratives in the context of the hypercentralized knowledge production of Euro-Arctic Russia is discussed in the article. The rapid modernization of the first half of the twentieth century led to radical changes of everyday life, including the disappearance of tacit knowledge, erosion of memory and cultural identity of northerners. In 1968, during Khrushchev’s ‘ottepel’, a crafts factory Belomorskie Uzory opened in Arkhangelsk with the goal to document and restore decaying crafts and fashion design from Euro-Arctic Russia. In the article, I discuss the case of the factory in light of decolonial and ecofeminist theory with a particular focus on fashion. The project shows that art-based participatory research strategies stimulate dialogical relations between the factory and young fashion designers and artists, leading to the revitalization of communities in the North.

This article aimed to identify the attitudes of undergraduate students towards online English language learning in the North-Eastern Federal University, Russia. The questionnaire was conducted using Google form. The sample included 303 undergraduate EFL students. The research subjects are the students of Institute of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Mathematics and Information Sciences and Automobile and Road College. The research tools were questionnaire and Chi-square test. The data were interpreted in terms of three parameters: by gender, by place of residence and by academic achievement. By gender 180 respondents were male, while 123 were female. The number of rural students is 125 students, whereas urban students make up 178. The majority of students (65,7 %) are B grade students, 16,2 % of students are A grade students, 18,2 % of students are С grade students. The results of the study revealed that students have a favourable attitude to online learning. In particular, female students were statistically detected to have a more complimentary attitude to online learning than male students. In contrast, the statistics did not discover the preference of online learning by the place of residence. As it was also shown that academic performance did not affect the preference of online learning. The challenges faced by students are slow Internet connection, non-comprehension of learning material, lack of effort and interest, and lack of personal space. In addition, this study revealed the unpreparedness of university network infrastructure and its technological capacity for conducting online classes. The study discovered that students prefer an equal mix of online and face-to-face instruction.

The authors justified the idea of developing online courses based on the use of Moodle tools, allowing the formation of knowledge in the field of technological and methodological skills and abilities to use educational applications, services, and their application in professional activities in the implementation of online learning in the digital environment of the university. Assessment of the effectiveness of the online course is confirmed by the solution of professional tasks from the knowledge of the digital educational environment with interdisciplinary content and tasks requiring the use of e-learning tools. Analysis of the results using two-way analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of factors on the effective feature using the F-test. The significance of the study lies in the development of online advanced training courses aimed at improving the technological level of teachers and educators of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in the implementation of the remote format of training using online distance learning tools and technologies.
