DASC: Dense adaptive self-correlation descriptor for multi-modal and multi-spectral correspondence
Establishing dense visual correspondence between multiple images is a fundamental task in many applications of computer vision and computational photography. Classical approaches, which aim to estimate dense stereo and optical flow fields for images adjacent in viewpoint or in time, have been dramatically advanced in recent studies. However, finding reliable visual correspondence in multi-modal or multi-spectral images still remains unsolved. In this paper, we propose a novel dense matching descriptor, called dense adaptive self-correlation (DASC), to effectively address this kind of matching scenarios. Based on the observation that a self-similarity existing within images is less sensitive to modality variations, we define the descriptor with a series of an adaptive self-correlation similarity for patches within a local support window. To further improve the matching quality and runtime efficiency, we propose a randomized receptive field pooling, in which a sampling pattern is optimized with a discriminative learning. Moreover, the computational redundancy that arises when computing densely sampled descriptor over an entire image is dramatically reduced by applying fast edge-aware filtering. Experiments demonstrate the outstanding performance of the DASC descriptor in many cases of multi-modal and multi-spectral correspondence.
Read moreITEM: Immersive Telepresence for Entertainment and Meetings—A Practical Approach
This paper presents an immersive telepresence system for entertainment and meetings (ITEM). The system aims to provide a radically new video communication experience by seamlessly merging participants into the same virtual space to allow a natural interaction among them and shared collaborative contents. With the goal to make a scalable, flexible system for various business solutions as well as easily accessible by massive consumers, we address the challenges in the whole pipeline of media processing, communication, and displaying in our design and realization of such a system. Particularly, in this paper we focus on the system aspects that maximize the end-user experience, optimize the system and network resources, and enable various teleimmersive (TI) application scenarios. In addition, we also present a few key technologies, i.e., fast object-based video coding for real world data and spatialized audio capture and 3-D sound localization for group teleconferencing. Our effort is to investigate and optimize the key system components and provide an efficient end-to-end optimization and integration by considering user needs and preferences. Extensive experiments show the developed system runs reliably and comfortably in real time with a minimal setup requirement (e.g., a webcam or a color plus depth camera, an optional microphone array, a laptop/desktop connected to the Internet) for TI communication. With such a really minimal deployment requirement, we present a variety of interesting applications and user experiences created by ITEM.

Objective: To measure cognitive impairment in athletes with a history of concussion, using an fMRI neuropsychological test battery. Background: American football is a controversial sport with recent research raising concerns about the long-term neurological consequences of repetitive concussive and sub-concussive injuries. Despite this interest, the neural and psychological status of retired American football players remains unknown. Design/Methods: We evaluated the performances and brain activation patterns of retired National Football League players (NFL alumni) relative to controls using fMRI optimised neuropsychological tests. Results:Behaviourally, the NFL alumni showed only modest performance deficits on tests of memory and planning. By contrast, they showed pronounced hyperactivation of the dorsolateral frontal and frontopolar cortices, particularly under higher planning demand. Critically, frontal lobe hyperactivation was correlated with a self-reported estimate of the number of concussions suffered across the career and was robust at the individual participant level. Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that NFL alumni have a heightened risk of developing frontal lobe dysfunction and suggest that fMRI can provide a sensitive marker of cognitive decline.

Abstract Electromagnetic (EM) interactions are probably the most fundamental and important in our lives. Most of our everyday experience is dominated by EM interactions (and gravity). Quantum electromagnetism is the first quantum field theory (QFT), on which all following QFTs are built. Thus, quantum electromagnetism not only explains much of the world around us, but is a prerequisite for the QFTs that explain the rest.KeywordsPolarization VectorPhoton StateCasimir ForceSimple Harmonic OscillatorRadiation RadiationThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Read moreA System for Integrated Collection and Analysis of Crystallographic Diffraction Data
A set of linked software modules has been installed at the A1 station of CHESS, the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source, which, with the underlying hardware, allows crystallographic users of the facility to evaluate crystals, collect diffraction images and process the images rapidly and with assurance of the quality of the resultant data, thereby making most efficient use of their beam time. The system includes a CCD detector and its controlling software, with a graphical user interface, a convenient oscillation camera featuring automated alignment with the X-ray beam, a program for optimizing crystal rotation range, and the HKL data-reduction package. Principles embodied in this system are applicable to other facilities where crystallographic data are routinely collected.
