ABSTRACT This paper centers around the “redness” of seven works of art from Roman times to our contemporary world. These include representational and abstract paintings that are linked by the primal, archetypal color red. Throughout the author explores deeply the experience of Beauty and Grief.

The article examines the activities of the American East India Squadron led by its commander Commodore J. Armstrong in China on the eve and during the Second Opium War (1856–1860). The activities of the commander of the East India Squadron and the U.S. diplomatic representative in the Qing Empire J.E. Ward on the implementation of the new challenges of U.S. Chinese policy set by Washington in the first half of the 1950s of the XIX century are analyzed in the article. Demonstration and use of force ("gunboat policy") were used by U.S. representatives in China, both the Department of State and the Naval Ministry, to intimidate the Qing authorities, to tear Taiwan away from China.

Abstract Date Presented 04/06/19 Motion tracking sensors were added to a commercial SaeboGlove, enabling patients to engage in manual practice of instrumental activities of daily living in a computer-generated virtual world. Sensor-derived performance in completing functional tasks in the virtual environment was compared to real-world performance assessed using gold-standard measures. Statistical analysis of data collected during use by 15 stroke patients confirms the concurrent validity of the computer-generated measures. Elucidating the emergence of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae–associated respiratory disease in ruminants requires identification of the pathogen host range. This bacterium was thought to be host restricted to subfamily Caprinae, but we describe its identification in healthy moose, caribou, and mule deer and diseased mule and white-tailed deer, all species in subfamily Capreolinae.

To compare the pharmacokinetics of various formulations of levetiracetam after oral administration of a single dose to healthy dogs. 6 neurologically normal mixed-breed dogs. A crossover study design was used. Blood samples for serum harvest were collected from each dog before and at various points after oral administration of one 500-mg tablet of each of 2 generic extended-release (ER) formulations, 1 brand-name ER formulation, or 1 brand-name immediate-release (IR) formulation of levetiracetam. Serum samples were analyzed to determine pharmacokinetic properties of each formulation by means of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. No dogs had clinically important adverse effects for any formulation of levetiracetam. All ER formulations had a significantly lower maximum serum drug concentration and longer time to achieve that concentration than did the IR formulation. Half-lives and elimination rate constants did not differ significantly among formulations. Values for area under the drug concentration-versus-time curve did not differ significantly between ER formulations and the IR formulation; however, 1 generic ER formulation had a significantly lower area under the curve than did other ER formulations. All ER formulations of levetiracetam had similar pharmacokinetic properties in healthy dogs, with some exceptions. Studies will be needed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the various formulations; however, findings suggested that twice-daily administration of ER formulations may be efficacious in the treatment of seizures in dogs.

Water utilities in California must promote water conservation, yet have a limited suite of rate structures that can be used to charge for water. Under traditional rate structures, a strong price‐based conservation signal can produce conservation yet result in revenue instability. California public water utilities face additional challenges as a result of the standards for reporting, accounting, and proportionality under Proposition 218. One solution for resolving these structural tensions between conservation and fiscal solvency in a Proposition 218 environment is the implementation of consumption‐based fixed rates (CBFR). This article describes the design and implementation of CBFR in Davis, Calif.

The scientific approach to room acoustics is now well over a hundred years old. Yet two concert halls from the nineteenth century (the Musikvereinssaal, Vienna of 1870 and the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam of 1888) are still viewed as among the best in the world, as is the first product of a scientific approach (Boston Symphony Hall, Massachusetts of 1900). Has a century of research and building new auditoria failed to make any progress? One is reminded of the situation with violins, modern violin makers fight to compete with the reputation of Stradivarius’ violins built 300 years ago. With auditorium acoustics, the search has been long, with bursts of activity at certain times often in response to new experimental techniques. Considerable progress has been made but the search is not over. This article hopes to elaborate on the challenges involved.
