This study focused on the determinants of cost efficiency among smallholder maize growers in Kano and Kaduna States of Nigeria. The study utilized a simple random sampling approach to select 200 small-scale maize growers. Primary data from cross-sectional sources were utilized based on a well-organized questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered to the respondents with the use of well-trained enumerators and agricultural extension agents in the year 2024. The data were evaluated using descriptive statistics and a stochastic cost efficiency frontier model. The outcome shows that the mean age of maize growers was evaluated at 48, 95% Confidence Interval CI [45.6, 50.4] years. The mean maize farm size was 1.42, 95% CI [1.349, 1.49] hectares per grower, which indicates that most growers cultivated small-scale farmland. The cost of seeds, the cost of fertilizer, the cost of labour, and depreciation costs were significantly different from zero in influencing cost efficiency among maize growers at p < 0.01. The cost of agrochemicals and maize output is significantly different from zero in influencing cost efficiency among maize growers at p < 0.05. The socio-economic stimuli significantly affecting cost inefficiency among maize growers include age, farming experience, household size, and level of education. The calculated scale effect was 10.27, 95% CI [10.78, 9.7365]; the calculated scale effect is greater than one, which signifies that there are positive economies of scale. This signifies that a unit increase in the total production costs increased the total maize output by 10.27 times during the course of maize farming. The study recommends that the maize growers should form themselves into cooperative groups. This will enable them to access credit, improved maize seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, and other farm inputs, information, and share ideas about maize farming.

Saving data to a memory card is often required if the data needs to be analyzed later. With Arduino boards, this is done by using the breakout boards of SD or micro-SD cards. The SD cards have been on the market for more than 20 years and are still commonly used, including the Arduino-based projects. In this chapter, we will go over some simple setup and wiring for the purpose of writing data files on the memory card for later usage.

Objective: This quality improvement (QI) project’s aim was to lower 30-day healthcare reutilization for patients aged 50 or older with hip fracture using an evidence-based discharge process method, the Re-Engineered Discharge (RED) Toolkit. Methods: The QI project of a revised patient discharge process to lower healthcare reutilization of Baton Rouge Rehabilitation Hospital (BRRH) hip fracture patients was implemented as an evidence-based quality improvement initiative. Inpatient and outpatient discharge process revisions were implemented at an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) based on Re-Engineered Discharge (RED) Toolkit recommendations. Inpatient revisions included patient barrier identification with associated documentation changes to the IRF interdisciplinary team form. Outpatient modifications consisted of an After-Hospital Care Plan (AHCP), and two post-discharge Telephone Follow-Up (TFU) calls. Results: Healthcare reutilization and thirty-day hospital readmission for this project were measured at 8.5% and 5.7%, respectively. A decrease in healthcare reutilization of at least 1.6% was observed for the IRF. Most participants scored at a high level (88.6%) of “patient knowledge of self-management” post intervention. Out of participants who did not attend their first Primary Care Provider (PCP) appointment, 33.3% experienced healthcare reutilization. This result emphasized the importance of seeing one’s PCP post-discharge. Patient satisfaction increased by 5% and 6.73%, measured by Hospital Consumer Assessment of HealthCare Providers and Systems (HCAHP) scores for nursing care and physician care, respectively. Conclusions: Implementation of a RED Toolkit-based discharge process at an IRF positively impacted all three study outcomes and associated healthcare costs in lowering preventable readmissions.

Abstract Two genetically differentiated forms of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), use different graminaceous host plants, coexist sympatrically throughout their ranges, yet seem to hybridize. To address the taxonomic status of the two forms, determine extent and directionality of hybridization, and examine host specificity, we compiled multilocus genotypes consisting of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes, an esterase locus, and eight amplified fragment-length polymorphism (AFLP) loci in moths collected across a broad geographic range. Multilocus analyses indicated 16% of individuals sampled were potentially hybrids with a minority being F1 in origin. Analysis of host use indicated asymmetries in host specificity with one strain specific to corn, Zea mays L., and the other strain predominating on pasture grasses and rice, but occasionally using corn. Location of hybrids in nature was biased toward cornfields, the habitat used by both strains. To assess genetic divergence of each gene, we calculated their relative strain discriminating ability. Eight AFLP loci collectively had the greatest discriminating power (98%), followed by a single AFLP locus (93%) and mtDNA (91%). Esterase exhibited 89% discrimination. Esterase is X-linked along with an assortative mating trait, suggesting esterase differentiation may be maintained by association with strain-specific fitness genes. Despite strong discrimination of these genes, most of the genome surveyed was not distinct. Cytonuclear comparisons provided evidence for unidirectional matings consistent with mate preference studies. Collectively, these data support introgressive hybridization between recently evolved species that are not completely reproductively isolated. Genetic divergence in the presence of gene flow may be a common phase in the speciation process, especially in taxa whose ranges have been altered dramatically by humans.
