A one-year-old female Eastern black-and-white Colobus (Colobus guereza) was evaluated after tangling its right forelimb in exhibit netting. Radiographs of the right forelimb revealed craniolateral luxation of the radial head and a complete transverse fracture of the proximal ulna, otherwise known as a type III Monteggia fracture. Open reduction was performed and a locking cuttable bone plate was placed to address the ulnar fracture. The reduced radial head was maintained by the placement of a Mini Tightrope Fixation System. Rapid return to normal activity was observed. Radiographs taken four weeks post-operatively showed healing of the fracture as well as appropriate articulation of the radial head. At three years post-operatively, the Colobus continued to demonstrate normal ambulation without evidence of growth disruption. This is the first documented report of this specific surgical technique and implant in an exotic species.

This article traces the transformation of hairworks in America during the mid-nineteenth-century. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin transformed the meaning of hair and hairworks in the American cultural imaginary by endowing Little Evangeline St. Clare’s hair with sacred, moralizing power. Likewise, after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln’s hair achieved nationwide, relic-like significance. The Abraham Lincoln Papers contains six hair requests; these letters demonstrate that the cultural meaning of Lincoln’s hair resembles the fictional power of Eva’s hair in Stowe’s novel. Analyzing this phenomena of relic-like hair modifies our understanding of the unprecedented sentimental reaction to Lincoln’s assassination and particularly the fascination with seeing and approaching the president’s body.

When interpreted in its context in the argument of Galatians, Gal 2.20 is an important part of Paul's discussion of justification by faith. It functions as a depiction of justification apart from any consideration of Jew or Gentile status. This conclusion is based on an examination of the flow of Gal 2.15–21, a consideration of 2.15–21 in its larger context, and a study of 2.20 itself. This role of Gal 2.20 has frequently been overlooked due to inherent difficulties in interpreting the passage and to specific features about the way scholars have interpreted the verse and the larger passage.

The proper combination of parametric and nonparametric regression procedures can improve upon the shortcomings of each when used individually. Considered is the situation where the researcher has an idea of which parametric model should explain the behavior of the data, but this model is not adequate throughout the entire range of the data. An extension of partial linear regression and two other methods of model-robust regression are developed and compared in this context The model-robust procedures each involve the proportional mixing of a parametric fit to the data and a nonparametric fit to either the data or residuals. Asymptotically optimal estimates for the mixing parameters are given, along with their convergence rates. Performance is based on bias and variance considerations, and theoretical mean squared error formulas are used to compare procedures. Simulation results establish the accuracy of the theoretical formulas and illustrate the potential benefits of the model-robust procedures. Two examples are given: Example 1 uses generated data from an underlying model with defined misspecification to show the theoretical benefits of the model-robust procedures, and Example 2 supplies an interesting application.

The effects of reader perspective and cognitive style on encoding, storage, and retrieval processes were investigated in two experiments. In both experiments, subjects read a story from one of two different perspectives or from no directed perspective, recalled the story from either the originally assigned perspective or the alternative perspective, and then took a recognition test on the story. In addition, subjects in both experiments were given an embedded figures test. In Experiment 1, subjects took the recall and recognition test immediately after reading the story and in Experiment 2, the recall and recognition tests were given four days later. In Experiment 1, subjects who read the story from either of the assigned perspectives (burglar or home buyer) correctly recognized more items that were important to the burglar perspective, but subjects who were not assigned a perspective showed no difference in recognition of burglar and home buyer information. It was suggested that perhaps assigning subjects a perspective induces them to think more about the passage and relate it to their world knowledge. The results of the immediate recall test suggest that readers use their knowledge associated with the assigned perspective as a retrieval plan. Individual differences in cognitive style had no effect on subjects' recall or recognition performance in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2, subjects with either high or low scores on the embedded figures test who recalled the story from either of the assigned perspectives (burglar or home buyer) recalled more burglar than home buyer information. Subjects with intermediate scores, however, showed no difference in recall of burglar and home buyer information. These results, together with those of Experiment 1, were interpreted as suggesting that structural characteristics of the text itself may affect storage and retrieval processes but not encoding processes. Reader perspective showed no effect on the delayed recognition test.
