There are many factors affecting and determining food selection in Beni Suef Governorate, through the field study of the study sample that took place in November 2016 with the distribution of about 460 questionnaire forms showing that family size and family income are among the most important factors affecting food consumption, as there is a direct relationship between the number of family members, their income and the degree of food consumption. They have awareness of the types and quantities of food they consume, as the greater the number of family members, the greater the demand for food, especially legumes and vegetables, and the less consumption of high-priced commodities such as meat and fruits.Although income is the primary determinant of food purchase, these data only appeared in specific commodities.Like meat and its quality Proximity or distance from markets and cooperative and consumer societies is one of the incentives to purchase food commodities due to the relatively low prices. It has been found that the spatial distribution of markets and cooperative societies is unfair within the city of Beni Suef, which requires providing alternative sources for these complexes in the form of kiosks that are distributed in a fair and appropriate manner. There is no objection to geographic information systems having a role in their distribution, taking into account the distribution of the population in each neighborhood of the cityThe increase in prices during the period (2009-2017), which was linked to the liberalization of the exchange rate of the pound, had a clear impact on the purchasing power of low-income groups, and this was evident through the purchase of food commodities with a lower monetary and food value, as these increases came in the prices of necessary food commodities such as meat and others, And they came close and did not match the increase in income in the study area, which necessarily means that we are facing a problem of malnutrition for many low-income families By analyzing and tracking the numbers of the food gap study, it was found that the governorate suffers from a food gap for some strategic commodities such as wheat, rice and red meat despite the continuous increase in the area of the wheat crop, but it is not commensurate with the population increase. The self-sufficiency rates of these crops were as follows: 25.18% for wheat, 5.35% for rice, 162.12% for red meat in 2009 and it was 74.96% for wheat, 4.23% for rice, and 61.96% for red meat in 2017.
