From Subversion to Hard-Wiring Equity: A Discourse Analysis of Nurses' Equity-Promoting Practices in Emergency Departments.
Nursing has articulated a shared commitment to equity in response to inequities in health and health care; however, understandings of how nurses enact equity are needed to uphold this professional mandate. This Foucauldian discourse analysis examined how nurses' equity-promoting practices are shaped by dominant discourses within the emergency department and illustrated that within this institutional context that constrained equity, nurses engaged in equity-promoting practices through subversion of discursive power. This study illustrates the need for embedding equity discourses within health care systems and ensuring meaningful supports for nurses in enacting equity-promoting practices within the emergency department setting.

We present a potential growth thermal index (PGTI) and assess its correlation with juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar fork length data collected near the end of the growth season in a range of latitudinal locations and geographic scales (watershed, regional, continental) across the American north-east. The PGTI is based on two components: a water temperature-dependent growth curve and a water temperature time series continuously describing the thermal environment preceding fish sampling. Testing various shapes and characteristics of the temperature-growth curve against fish length data revealed strong positive correlations for all combinations. PGTI warming, calculated only from the beginning of the growth season until maximum summer temperature is reached, consistently performed well in explaining fish size-at-age across the latitudinal gradient and the three geographic scales that were considered. Varying thermal contrasts created by repeat subsampling of the dataset showed that fish length is better explained by the level of thermal contrast within the dataset than the geographical scale of analysis. A simple generalized linear model using a log link function with PGTI warming, fish density and water discharge as predictors explained 87% of the variance of size-at-age of 0+ and 1+ juvenile Atlantic salmon.

Climate change and resilience of tributary thermal refugia for salmonids in eastern Canadian rivers
River water temperature regimes are expected to change along with climate over the next decades. This work focuses on three important salmon rivers of eastern Canada, two of which warm up most summers to temperatures higher than the Atlantic salmon lethal limit (>28°C). Water temperature was monitored at 53 sites on the three basins during 2–18 summers, with about half of these sites either known or potential thermal refugia for salmon. Site-specific statistical models predicting water temperature, based on 10 different climate scenarios, were developed in order to assess how many of these sites will remain cool enough to serve as refugia in the future (2046–2065). The results indicate that, while 19 of the 23 identified refugia will persist, important increases in the occurrence and duration of temperature events in excess of 24°C and 28°C, respectively, in the mainstems of the rivers, will lead to higher demands for thermal refugia in the salmonid populations.Editor Z.W.
