Purpose Empathetic engagement is considered a vital component in forming respect-based relationships between patients and clinicians, leading to more optimal patient care. The purpose of this study was to explore whether there was a relationship between dental hygiene students' levels of empathy and student demographics including age, gender, year in school, and the degree type of dental hygiene program attending. Methods This was a cross-sectional observation study conducted among dental hygiene undergraduate students attending three dental hygiene programs in the Midwestern United States. Two programs offered associate degrees and one offered a baccalaureate degree. Participants completed the 20-item Jefferson Scale of Empathy©, student edition (JSE-S) along with demographic questions including age, gender, year in dental hygiene program, and degree type of dental hygiene program. Descriptive statistics and comparisons of the empathy scores were conducted using t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Regressions were conducted to determine whether the students' year in dental hygiene program and the type of degree program were predictors of empathy. Results Forty-one participants completed the questionnaire for a 65% response rate. The mean empathy score was 83.05 ± 10.04 among the participants. There were no statistically significant differences between levels of empathy of first- and second-year students or those attending a two-year institution versus a four-year university. Age, year in program, and type of degree were not shown to be predictors of empathy. Conclusion Results from this study did not show relationships or predictors of empathy with dental hygiene students' demographics or type of degree program. Future research should expand beyond a small homogenous convenience sample and include a longitudinal gauge to assess potential fluctuations in empathy as students progress throughout the curriculum and as practicing clinicians.

Recent years have seen an increased interest in the construction and exploitation of ignorance, with the establishment of a field of agnotology (ignorance studies). This effort has focused almost exclusively on governments and corporations, though little or none on religion. After exploring work in agnotology and introducing the concept of agnomancy (the creation or conjuring of ignorance), the present article offers a preliminary application of these perspectives to religion, investigating what light agnotology sheds on religion and when and for what reasons religion engages in agnomancy.

This study provides an analysis of producers’ crop planting decision behavior in response to econometric factors, the biophysical environment, and biofuel policy mandates. Specifically, we measure the effects due to economic impacts on an area planted with corn from 1990 to 2015. We develop a crop supply response model and estimate that acres planted with corn in the state of North Dakota have increased by 1.2 million over the last twelve years. Also, the value of crop price elasticities indicates a significant impact on corn planted acreage decisions due to change in crop prices. Corn future price and ethanol price elasticities are positively impacted by corn planted acreage whereas corn planted acreage negatively impacts competitive crop price elasticities. We find that impact of climate variables on corn acreage decision is evident. We show that the inclusion of county interaction effect variables significantly improves the model parameters. Key findings also indicate that a 1% increase in soil moisture in month of May led to a 0.1486% increase in corn acreage expansion. Similarly, as maximum temperature increased during the planting season, corn planted acreage expanded significantly. Also, the total rainfall is positively correlated with corn planted acreage as expected. For example, a 1% increase in total rainfall led to a 0.2143% increase in total corn planted acreage.

Abstract Stereotypes are simplified and sometimes over‐generalized conceptions of people or groups based on prior assumptions that may or may not be grounded in reality

In order to relate changing stress conditions within rock masses to geologic factors, the investigators have developed a welded, high modulus, solid inclusion borehole probe to determine 3-dimensional stress changes at a point in a rock mass. The probe was developed and tested using the laboratory facilities of the U.S. Geological Survey, Denver, Colo.Following theoretical guidelines set forth by Leeman (1964, p. 54-55), a probe was fabricated out of a chrome alloy steel ball, 1 inch in diameter mounted with 3 strain gage rosettes and encapsulated in a filled waterproof epoxy. In order to establish the reliability of the probe, a series of tests were conducted by subjecting the probe to changing hydrostatic and triaxial stress fields. In all of these tests the probe responded as predicted by elastic theory.Because reduction of field measurements is difficult and timeconsuming by use of a desk calculator, computation of the 3-dimensional stress tensor has been programmed for computer analysis. The probe, when adequately field tested, will be capable of resolving data that will aid in the understanding of anisotropic rock behavior associated with tunneling, and other underground or near surface engineering operations.
