Corning Museum of Glass

Abstract The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, houses thousands of glass beads acquired in the early 1970s from Alastair Lamb. These materials represent Lamb's research at Kuala Selinsing, Pengkalan Bujang, and Johor Lama (all in Malaysia), and Takua Pa (Thailand), spanning almost two millennia of interactions across the Bay of Bengal interaction sphere. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometric (LA‐ICP‐MS) analysis of a subset of material attributed to these sites provides significant comparative data that elucidates the patterns of glass production within the region alongside imported materials from the Middle East and China over the longue durée.

This article traces the history of a number of stained glass windows designed for the world’s leading museum of art and design, the South Kensington Museum, which opened in 1857. During the expansion of the museum in the 1860s and 1870s under the directorship of Henry Cole, several large-scale windows celebrating the union of science and art formed part of an ambitious interior decorative scheme that reflected the museum’s collection, its unique history, and evolving role as a national institution for the promotion of artistic and technical education. Although most of these windows were later removed, and some have been lost, the rediscovery of some windows in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s store, and the reinstatement of others, provides an opportunity to consider the original scheme, its context, and significance. Drawing on themes of religious and moral instruction, as well as knowledge and learning, combining allegorical and figurative scenes with ornamental motifs, institutional devices, and royal mottos, the iconography of the windows demonstrates a peculiarly British approach to stained glass design for secular public contexts. Interpreting these windows reveals how the decoration of public museums and galleries articulated institutional aims and helped to define and shape nineteenth-century visual culture.<br>

Based on application of heated bi‐metal strip bending theory to measured chip warp on 0.5 mm thick bare Corning ® EAGLEXG ® Glass and Corning Lotus™ NXT Glass, low substrate CTE minimizes chip warp. Different substrates have different effective process temperatures. Chip warp is relatively insensitive to substrate Young’s modulus vs. substrate CTE.

Abstract For 400 years, telescopes and microscopes have provided us with access to distant and tiny worlds. We note significant moments in the evolution of the glass used in both devices from their first appearance until the present, relate those moments to key discoveries, and reflect about what it means to extend our sense of vision using glass, the eye of science.

Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is one of modern instrumental methods whose usage in the elemental analysis of cultural heritage objects has recently noticeably increased.The method requires almost no sample preparation and permits the direct analysis of solid samples, availing only minute amount of the material.Although they seem to be microdestructive, ablation processes remain usually within the scale acceptable for art historians, conservators, archaeologists and art curators; therefore, the capability to perform a multi-elemental, ultra trace and isotopic analysis can be introduced to studies of cultural heritage objects.The lack of appropriate matrix-matched certified reference materials or fractionation effects influencing the final quantitative results to a different extent is widely reported among the main limitations of LA-ICP-MS.Despite these constrains, LA-ICP-MS is a method that can be flexibly tuned to collect the desired elemental information and this paper brings together information about the successful application of this method in the analysis of diverse historical materials enabling researchers to build valuable knowledge about cultural heritage objects from all over the world.

Recent years have seen an increased interest in developing genetically modified algae and other microorganisms for use in biofuel and bio-based chemical production. However, this comes at a time when there is uncertainty within the industry and the academic community about how such uses will be regulated by governments in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, as well as concerns by some observers over the adequacy of existing regulations to cover organisms created using techniques known as synthetic biology. However, a reasonable road map is emerging of a regulatory regime that can allow pilot, demonstration and commercial stage uses of modified microorganisms. In the U.S., regulations of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and possibly of the U.S. Department of Agriculture might govern the industrial use of microorganisms in contained photobioreactors or algae in open ponds, and these regulations generally require conducting assessments of the potential environmental risks of such large-scale uses. The EPA regulations include a mechanism by which outdoor experimentation of modified microorganisms can take place in a stepwise approach, with risks assessed as the scale of experimentation increases, which provides an accessible path to exploration of the use of modified algae in open ponds. Such risk assessments will address legitimate questions of potential ecological impact, such as the potential survival and dissemination of the production organism, the potential for heterologous genes to horizontally transfer to indigenous microorganisms, and the chance for other unintended effects on nontarget species. Numerous companies have successfully navigated these regulations, including some recent project approvals in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.

Two large, 2 m tall, cut and mold-cast crystal glass torchères or candelabra at Shangri La, Honolulu, Hawaii, were completely dismantled for conservation in 2010. The torchères were made by Baccarat and date to around 1907. They have been on display since acquisition in 1966, with only minimal surface cleaning, and in 2010 required piece-by-piece disassembly for cleaning and stabilization. The prolonged exposure of the torchères to coastal salt air created a dichotomy of preservation issues, in that the glass was well protected and preserved, while the metalwork was aggressively corroded. After disassembly, all the glass pieces of the torchères were individually cleaned, and all the metal fittings were cleaned, stabilized, and coated to protect them from the aggressive environment. As many of the metal fittings as possible were removed from the glass, so that the glass and metal could be treated separately, especially since the metal required chemical cleaning and stabilization. A regular maintenance program of dusting and annual cleaning is recommended to minimize any heavy accumulation or dust, dirt, debris and salt. Forty-five years may be a good estimate of the treatment cycle required for that location.

In this study, stability conditions of receding horizon control (RHC) based on a horizon size are proposed for linear discrete systems. The proposed stability conditions present a relevant horizon size which can guarantee the stability of RHC even though a final state weighting matrix does not satisfy non-increasing monotonicity of optimal cost. Therefore, the possible range of the final state weighting matrix ensuring the stability of RHC is extended to zero and also it can be applied to the stability problems of other forms of model predictive control like the conventional stability conditions.
