Prenatal Opioid Exposure and Maternal-Infant Coregulation as Indicators of Early Infant Neurodevelopment.
Little is known about the short- and long-term effects of prenatal opioid exposure on infant neurodevelopment. Infants with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) are often admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) where the development of coregulation between mothers and infants is easily disrupted. Understanding early mother-infant coregulation is needed to guide intervention strategies for these high-risk mother-infant dyads. Explore the impact of prenatal opioid exposure on mother-infant coregulation, as an indicator of early infant neurodevelopment, in response to a standardized stress experiment, the Still Face Paradigm (SFP). A prospective cohort design was used to enroll opioid-exposed (N=11) and non-exposed (N=13) mother-infant dyads, when infants discharged from the NICU were 6 to 9months. Dyadic heart rate variability (HRV) data were used as a measure of coregulation and were recorded using heart rate monitors during the 3 phases of the SFP: (a) baseline, (b) still-face, or flat affect, and (c) reunion. We conducted analyses to determine differences within the HRV dyad profiles. HRV profiles differed between the 2 study groups. In the opioid-exposed group: (a) infants exhibited more irregular autonomic processes, (b) mothers had higher HRV baselines, and (c) there was an overall dysregulation between mothers and infants compared to the non-opioid exposed group. These differences may suggest that prenatal opioid exposure contributes to difficulty with dyadic co-regulation which may negatively impact early infant neurodevelopment. Additional research is needed to better understand the role of prenatal opioid exposure in infant neurodevelopment.

Both monographs were based on laboratory-like and interdisciplinary teamwork at the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure, University of Cambridge, undertaken when he was a research officer from 1966 and Director from 1974 to 1994.The two monographs were distinctive in crossing several branches of the social sciences.Roger Schofield played an important role in the international development of historical demography through his work on behalf of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population. In England he was of central importance in the foundation of the Local Population Studies Society, and for 30 years fostered the research of local amateurs using registers of the Anglican church to reconstruct parochial population history.During his early career, he had been a postgraduate student of Geoffrey Elton at Clare College when he did important research on early Tudor taxation that has remained seminal. In 1965 he was appointed to a post in Tudor history at Queen Mary College (London) but resigned in the same year just before his lecturing was due to begin.

Physician associates/assistants (PAs) and advanced practice RNs (APRNs) are a vital part of the healthcare team. As the PA and APRN workforce continues to grow, collaborations can move beyond the bedside. With organizational support, a shared APRN/PA Council allows these clinicians to raise a collective voice on issues that are unique to their practice and to implement meaningful solutions, thus improving the quality of their work environment and clinician satisfaction.

The emergence of food production during the earliest Neolithic of the Near East was accompanied by profound changes in the ways in which societies were organized. Elaborate and multi-stage mortuary practices involving the removal, caching, and plastering of symbolically charged skulls are thought to have played an important role in cross-cutting household lines to integrate communities and maintain social cohesion during the late tenth to ninth millennium cal BP, particularly in Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B settlements located in the southern Levant. While the ritual and mortuary activities associated with skull manipulation were dramatic and high impact occasions that drew people and households together, it is likely they were highly episodic and, consequently, attendant community cohesion susceptible to decay over time. Recent research in southern Jordan, where skull plastering was not practiced as seen elsewhere in the southern Levant, has revealed that non-residential building structures were a common feature of early Pre-Pottery Neolithic settlements. Renewed excavations at Beidha, a Middle PPNB settlement located in the Shara’a mountains, have revealed a large, easily accessible communal structure that provided a focal point in which mundane, informal daily activities could regularly take place. The routine and repeated interactions fostered by such non-domestic structures facilitated highly durable modes of community cohesion and was part of a temporally deep ethos of community that first emerged a thousand years earlier when people first began to experiment with plant cultivation. It appears that in southern Jordan, a distinctive social cohesion pathway developed that engaged community daily practice within non-residential buildings to maintain and strengthen social structures, rather than occasional and dramatic ritual and mortuary practices used elsewhere in the southern Levant.
