The paper gives the analysis of the ship power plant its elements: a shaft line and deadwood bearings. The deadwood bearings are said to serve as supports for the ship shaft line. The operating conditions, the effect of loads and the occurrence of possible defects that reduce the life of deadwood bearings and the shaft line are described. The actual operation life of ships without repair depends on the technical condition of the deadwood unit and on the size of clearance between the propeller shaft and deadwood bearings which increases because of wear of the bearings. Structural and technological ways of increasing the reliability of deadwood bearings are described. It is stated that the resource loss of deadwood bearings is caused by the irreversible physical processes occurring on the surface and inside the bearings at the structural level under continuous cyclic stresses, which results in the extreme condition and wear unacceptable for further operation. There are considered the methods of improving the structures of the deadwood unit, as well as new solutions for the design or repair of ship deadwood bearings. There is proposed a new design of a deadwood bearing based on the requirements and rules of regulatory documents. A sketch and a picture of the proposed deadwood bearing are presented, which is a metal housing with segments made of two materials: ZX-100K (Zedex) and rubber. The proposed design of the deadwood bearing will increase the reliability of the ship deadwood device, eliminate non-working sections of segments and increase the support area of the propeller shaft on the bushings. It has been inferred that there is a possibility to reduce the contact static and dynamic specific loads and amortize the shock loads.

Given the tremendous growth of factor allocation strategies in active and passive fund management, we investigate whether either asset allocation strategies based on factors or sectors provide investors with a superior portfolio performance. Our focus is on comparing factor versus sector allocation as some recent empirical evidence indicates the dominance of sector over country portfolios. We analyze the performance and performance differences of sector and factor portfolios for various weighting and portfolio optimization approaches including ‘equal-weighting’ (1/N), ‘risk-parity’ (RP), minimum-variance (MinVar), mean-variance (MV), Bayes-Stein (BS) and Black-Litterman (BL) by employing a sample-based approach in which the sample moments are the input parameters for the allocation model. For the period from May 2007 to November 2020, our results clearly reveal that, over longer investment horizons, factor portfolios provide relative superior performances. For shorter periods, however, we observe time varying and alternating performance dominances as the relative advantage of one over the other strategy depends on the economic cycle. We find that during “normal” times factor portfolios clearly dominate sector portfolios, whereas during crisis periods sector portfolios are superior offering better diversification opportunities.

The VIVIA Hemodialysis System (Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Deerfield, IL, USA) was designed for patient use at home to reduce the burden of treatment and improve patient safety. It has unique features including extended use of the dialyzer and blood set through in situ hot-water disinfection between treatments; generation of on-line infusible-quality dialysate for automated priming, rinseback and hemodynamic support during hypotension and a fully integrated access disconnect sensor. The safety and performance of VIVIA were assessed in two clinical studies. A first-in-man study was a prospective, single-arm study that involved 22 prevalent hemodialysis (HD) patients who were treated for ∼4 h, four times a week, for 10 weeks. A second clinical study was a prospective, single-arm study (6-8 h of dialysis treatment at night three times a week) that involved 17 prevalent patients treated for 6 weeks. There were 1114 treatments from the two studies (first-in-man study, 816; extended duration study, 298). Adverse events (AEs) were similar in the two studies to those expected for prevalent HD patients. No deaths and no device-related serious AEs occurred. Adequacy of dialysis ( Kt / V ) urea in both clinical trials was well above the clinical guidelines. VIVIA performed ultrafiltration accurately as prescribed in the two studies. The majority of patients achieved 10 or more uses of the dialyzer. Endotoxin levels and bacterial dialysate sampling met infusible-quality dialysate standards. These results confirm the safety and expected performance of VIVIA.

The relevance of sustainability first appeared to me during my civil engineering studies at Stanford University. In the early 2000s, concepts such as replacing cement additives with fly ash or the designing of energy-efficient air condition systems were not yet questions included in my weekly problem sets. But luckily, at the time, there were easy ways to self-supplement by being proactive about the information around me. I devoured the now classic books Natural Capitalism and Cradle to Cradle. Visiting local Bay Area construction projects became my hobby. I volunteered at organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or GRID Alternatives so that I could build things with my hands to learn why and how things were built because maybe there was actual logic behind it all. And I followed and supported a new organization called the U.S. Green Building Council, which was so unabashedly challenging the entrenched building codes that dictate the future of the built environment. All of these influences and change points combined to paint a very clear picture: The built environment needs a major upgrade and it would take a vast web of decisions and actions to deliver the results we needed. It is a fascinating challenge that still inspires my career today.

A prosthetist makes a conventional socket by wrapping plaster bandage around the residual limb and using the resulting shell to create a positive model. After he or she modifies the plaster, it is used to create a laminated socket. Such sockets are almost perfect cylinders that encapsulate the limb. The bone is centered in soft, compressible tissue that must move aside before the bone can push against the socket to transmit force or torque to the prosthesis. In a compression/release stabilized (CRS) socket, three or more longitudinal depressions compress and displace tissue between the socket wall and the bone to reduce lost motion when the bone is moved with respect to the socket. Release areas between depressions are opened to accommodate displaced tissue. Without these openings provided, the CRS socket will not function as intended. Often, the release areas of compression are the struts of a carbon-fiber frame, and the regions between struts are left open. A frame with openings may be modified by the prosthetist adding a thin membrane fully surrounding the limb but allowing the membrane and underlying tissue to enter the release openings. The membrane may contain electrodes, and it may constitute a roll-on liner that helps suspend the prosthesis. We introduce three socket designs: transradial, transfemoral, and transhumeral.

We discuss the design and implementation of VISAGE, an object-oriented user interface framework that is part of GE's FACE Flexible Architecture Compiler Environment [1]. High-level services include a domain-independent graph editor that provides standard methods for viewing and editing hierarchical graphs, including graph layout. Editors that are customized to a specific application are built by inheritance of the domain-independent graph editor's functionality and overloading of the display, selection and editing methods. At a lower layer, presentation objects are responsible for parsing user input, displaying application output, providing mouse sensitivity and command dialogue execution. These presentation objects separate the application from its user interface, and thus promote system modularity.
