Verification of Ground Reinforcement Safety Against Level 1 Earthquake Motion Used for Small Buildings

In this study, the pultrusion forming behavior and mechanical properties of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) rods with irregular cross sections were investigated. A thermal pultrusion machine equipped with a compression mold featuring slide cores independently controlled by a servo press was developed to manufacture CF/PEEK rods with T-shaped cross sections. These rods, directly fabricated from CF/PEEK prepreg tape bundles, exhibited no voids or layer marks typically caused by the tape stacking process.Cross-sectional observations during pultrusion confirmed that the prepreg tape in the web region was extruded into the flange region, thus forming the T-shaped cross section. To examine the influence of fiber orientation on mechanical performance, three-point bending tests were conducted on the T-shaped CF/PEEK rods. During these tests, the rods exhibited overall torsional deformation around the loading nose. Failure initiated in either the flange or the web as the torsional deformation progressed. The thermal pultrusion process developed in this study enabled the efficient and continuous production of CF/PEEK rods with irregular cross sections, achieving both high mechanical performance and excellent formability.
Read moreTransition from vehicle to Grotthuss proton transfer in a nanosized flask: cryogenic ion spectroscopy of protonated p-aminobenzoic acid solvated with D2O.
Proton transfer (PT) is one of the most ubiquitous reactions in chemistry and life science. The unique nature of PT has been rationalized not by the transport of a solvated proton (vehicle mechanism) but by the Grotthuss mechanism in which a proton is transported to the nearest proton acceptor along a hydrogen-bonded network. However, clear experimental evidence of the Grotthuss mechanism has not been reported yet. Herein we show by infrared spectroscopy that a vehicle-type PT occurs in the penta- and hexahydrated clusters of protonated p-aminobenzoic acid, while Grotthuss-type PT is observed in heptahydrated clusters, indicating a change in the PT mechanism depending on the degree of hydration. These findings emphasize the importance of the usually ignored vehicle mechanism as well as the degree of hydration. It highlights the possibility of controlling the PT mechanism by the number of water molecules in chemical and biological environments.

Cutting of road surfaces, one of the construction tasks, is in short need of manpower, and automation of cutting operations is required in the future. In road surface cutting work, a cutter attached to a road surface cutter is rotated and lowered to cut into the ground. Experienced operators can judge whether the cutter is cutting all the way down to the asphalt by the sound of the cutter and the vibration of the cutter, but inexperienced beginners may not be able to accurately grasp the work situation and may not be able to cut all the way down to the asphalt section. Therefore, this study aims to automate the judgment of the skilled operator on whether or not the road surface has been cut to the bottom of the asphalt by the sound of the cutting operation.

FLOOD TEST OF FULL-SCALE MOUNTED-FLOATABLE HOUSE WITH FIVE-METER INUNDATION FLOOD-PROOFING
We propose a floatable flood-resistant house that is resistant to flooding up to a depth of 5 m. It includes foundation, water supply and drainage pipes that enable smooth ascent, and mooring devices that prevent the loss of the house and slippage during landing. We also propose a draft calculation method to check the ascent balance. These measures and calculation methods were demonstrated in the inundation test of the full-scale test building. It was shown that it is possible to remove foreign drifting objects under the house after landing and to pull it back to its original position.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to support clinical judgement in medicine. We constructed a new predictive model for diabetic kidney diseases (DKD) using AI, processing natural language and longitudinal data with big data machine learning, based on the electronic medical records (EMR) of 64,059 diabetes patients. AI extracted raw features from the previous 6 months as the reference period and selected 24 factors to find time series patterns relating to 6-month DKD aggravation, using a convolutional autoencoder. AI constructed the predictive model with 3,073 features, including time series data using logistic regression analysis. AI could predict DKD aggravation with 71% accuracy. Furthermore, the group with DKD aggravation had a significantly higher incidence of hemodialysis than the non-aggravation group, over 10 years (N = 2,900). The new predictive model by AI could detect progression of DKD and may contribute to more effective and accurate intervention to reduce hemodialysis.
Read moreDiscussions on simplified model for Simulation of induction bending
During induction bending of a steel pipe, a very complicated phenomenon occurs due to electromagnetic induction, heat conduction, plastic deformation and change of material properties depending on temperature which interact with each other. The numerical model to simulate the phenomenon using a general purpose FE analysis program ADINA is constructed. The authors discuss the possibility of the thermal-mechanical coupled analysis omitting electromagnetic analysis in which internal heat generation in the steel pipe originally by electromagnetic induction is replaced by external heat transfer. Analysis results show a certain good agreement with experimental results so that the simplified simulation model would like to be improved to be available for other electromagnetic induction conditions.
