Read moreThe Socioeconomic Impacts of Emergent Biotechnology on the Next Human Age
Modern biotechnology has progressed to unforeseeable heights, from genetic engineering to radical life extension. The rapid advent of this technology has enforced upon us a duty to contemplate the ethics surrounding it to inform our decisions. One pressing aspect of contemporary bioethics lies in medical developments that have become widely consumed resources. In modern society, big pharmaceutical companies dominate the healthcare industry, which makes them uniquely positioned to introduce new-age biotechnology as consumer resources. A "big pharma" future exemplified by the emergence of revolutionary new-age biotechnology presents severe ethical concerns. This paper describes potential scenarios where emergent biotechnology becomes a consumer resource as a result of aggressive marketing, indirect coercion, and monopoly of the "big pharma" companies. Chasing higher profitability and benefiting from their monopoly position, big pharmaceutical companies can price new biotechnologies at excessive levels, resulting in new biotechnology proliferating along socioeconomic lines. Such a development threatens to create an elite genetic class and destroy social mobility. In order to mitigate such consequences, this paper proposes a price cap mechanism to improve equal access to emerging biotechnology and promote innovations in breakthrough treatments.
Read moreA survey to applications of deep learning in autonomous driving
In this work, this paper discussed the maneuver of autonomous vehicles, the application of deep learning technology in autonomous driving and improvements in the recognition and training of autonomous driving. First, we discussed how the pure pursuit algorithm calculates the route to the destination. Then, for the maneuver of autonomous vehicles, we listed the use of fuzzy logic and actuator. For driving safety, we introduced eight factors that it depends on. To apply deep learning technology in autonomous driving, we introduced how deep learning is applied to autonomous driving by explaining the four main parts of the pipeline of autonomous driving: perception, localization, prediction and decision making. We also noted the KITTI dataset, popularly used in the deep learning academia. Finally, for improvements in the recognition and training of autonomous driving, we presented three ways: using neural networks, using more effective datasets, and virtual environments that simulate the real world.

To determine whether a high rate of postpartum depression (PPD), previously found in immigrant Hispanic women at a community clinic, would also be found in a community sample. Sixty women from local community settings were given the PPDS-S instrument and the General Acculturation Index to screen for PPD symptoms. Data were then compared with previously published community clinic data. Sixty percent of the immigrant Hispanic women showed significant PPD. The only statistically significant positive predictive factor for increased PPD symptoms was having a previous history of depression. In addition, 54% had an elevated symptom content profile score for suicidal thinking. Health practitioners should be aware of a potentially high rate of PPD in this population, especially in light of previously studied increased rates of suicide attempts in Latinas. If a prior history of depression is predictive of PPD, it is possible that many of the mothers in our sample suffered from depression prior to the postpartum period, but were not appropriately diagnosed or treated. Recommendations for outreach and further research are discussed. In particular, further research regarding the prenatal prevalence of depression in immigrant Hispanic women is recommended in order to further understand the high incidence of PPD.
