Evaluating Social Acceptance of eXtended Reality (XR) Agent Technology: A User Study
CRITICAL THINKING AND INFORMATION LITERACY: EFFECTIVE TOOLS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION RESOURCES AND MEDIA COMPANIES
The article examines the relevance of critical thinking and information literacy as key skills for media companies in the context of information overload and the spread of disinformation. The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of these competencies on the effectiveness of information resource management and content quality. The novelty of this work lies in its proposal to integrate critical thinking and information literacy into the strategies of media organizations, which can enhance their market resilience. The research methods include an analysis of existing theories, case studies from real practice, surveys among representatives of the media industry, and interviews with professionals in the fields of media and education to obtain qualitative data on the impact of these skills on company operations. The results show that the development of critical thinking and information literacy not only improves the information processing workflow but also facilitates more informed decision-making. This, in turn, is critically important for maintaining audience trust and creating high-quality content. In conclusion, the article emphasizes the necessity of incorporating these skills into the operations of media companies to enhance their competitiveness and resilience in today’s information landscape.
Read moreDecoding the star system: Twitter and its impact on journalism in the global South
Abstract Changes brought about by the digitalisation of journalism in the global South have implications for the role that the press plays in politics and governance, particularly in terms of giving a voice to those on the margins. This paper presents original evidence from India to consider how Twitter is reshaping the hierarchies within journalism and how it contributes to a ‘star system’ in Indian media institutions whereby national journalists as well as celebrities have gained more influence over journalists working in the regional press. Drawing on public profiles of over 50 journalists, while anonymizing individual identities, we computationally map their follower‐following networks on Twitter and analyse the resulting structures to show how they intensify the historical divide between the Delhi‐based legacy institutions and the vernacular language media. Besides using network graphs, we develop topic models of the biographies of journalists from different social cohorts and find a divergence in the way celebrity‐seeking journalists use Twitter more effectively than those working in the regional press, with the latter not able to match the strategic use of the network for personal branding by the former cohort. We conclude that this divergence can also be contributing towards a star system like structure of journalism online with readership and influence flowing to those at the centre. We conclude with recommendations for editors, journalists as well as technology developers on how to avoid such outcomes.
Read moreV4Design: Intelligent Analysis and Integration of Multimedia Content for Creative Industries
Nowadays, vast amounts of multimedia content are being produced, archived, and digitized, resulting in great troves of data of interest. Examples include user-generated content, such as images, videos, text, and audio posted by users on social media and wikis, or content provided through official publishers and distributors, such as digital libraries, organizations, and online museums. This digital content can serve as a valuable source of inspiration to the creative industries, such as architecture and gaming, to produce new innovative assets or to enhance and (re-)use existing ones. However, in its current form, this content is difficult to be reused and repurposed due to the lack of appropriate solutions for its retrieval, analysis, and integration into the design process. In this article, we present V4Design, a novel framework for the automatic content analysis, linking, and seamless transformation of heterogeneous multimedia content to help architects and virtual reality game designers establish innovative value chains and end-user applications. By integrating and intelligently combining state-of-the-art technologies in computer vision, 3-D generation, text analysis, generation and semantic integration, and interlinking, V4Design provides architects and video game designers with innovative tools to draw inspiration from archive footage and documentaries, inspiring and eventually supporting the design process.

In this paper we describe the xR4DRAMA system, a solution that makes use of XR capabilities to support professionals who deal with disasters, man-made crises or media productions. The key contribution of this work in progress is the increase of situation awareness, which is achieved by the innovative combination of data collection, multimedia and sensor analysis, linking data, GIS and interactive XR technologies. The proposed platform is designed to facilitate the creation of immersive environments using semantically enriched content and comprises a powerful tool that is applicable to multiple real use case scenarios.

Reports on the Workshops Held at the Sixth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media
The workshops day at the Sixth International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media included three full‐day workshops (Real‐Time Analysis and Mining of Social Streams, Social Media Visualization, and When the City Meets the Citizen) and one half‐day workshop (The Potential of Social Media Tools and Data for Journalists in the News Media Industry). Workshops were held on June 4, 2012, the day prior to the first day of the technical conference, in Dublin, Ireland.
Read moreDigital Archives: Semantic Search and Retrieval
Social media, in the recent years, has become the main source of information regarding society’s feedback on events that shape the everyday life. The social web is where journalists look to find how people respond to the news they read but is also the place where politicians and political analysts would look to find how societies feel about political decisions, politicians, events and policies that are announced. This work reports on the design and evaluation of a search and retrieval interface for socially enriched web archives. The considerations on the end user requirements regarding the social content are presented as well as the approach on the design and testing using a large collection of web documents.

Parallel Sequence Spread Spectrum (PSSS) is a physical layer (PHY) base band technology. It was selected for the wireless sensor network standard IEEE802.15.4-2006, in order to increase data rate and radio performance in fading channels for frequency bands below 1GHz. In the work presented in this paper PSSS is used for the first time in the 60 GHz ISM Band to achieve ultra-high transmission speed similar to IEEE802.11ad but at lower receiver complexity. A different encoding scheme than for IEEE802.15.4-2006 has been applied to improve the coverage range of the 60 GHz radio. Using an available 60GHz heterodyne radio we achieved a measured data rate of 4Gb/s at a distance of 3 m using a simple Vivaldi antenna. The signal processing was performed off-line using a Matlab implementation in a "Hardware in the Loop" approach. Furthermore we will outline the architecture of a mixed-signal (analog/digital) baseband processor that reduces the implementation complexity by at least one order of magnitude. This will result both in lower power dissipation as well as lower Silicon area consumption.
