The redistribution of street space plays a central role in urban and transport planning. In this context, Tactical Urbanism offers a flexible and participatory approach to testing out street space design. However, redesigns are often associated with lengthy administrative processes and a lack of acceptance. Digital participation and visualisation methods with virtual reality can help to visualise redesign before implementation. This article brings Tactical Urbanism together with virtual reality technologies and analyses the use of ‘digital Tactical Urbanism’ based on the redesign of a station forecourt. Based on an online survey, Tactical Urbanism measures were developed, inserted as 3D models in 360° photos of the forecourt and could be experienced interactively in virtual reality glasses. Interviews were then conducted with public transport users and administrative experts to explore the opportunities, limitations and framework conditions of Tactical Urbanism in combination with virtual reality for planning processes. The results of the interviews show that the virtual reality world promotes an immersive experience of the redesign and motivates participation in planning processes. In the future, digital Tactical Urbanism could support street design, particularly in sensitive and conflict-ridden public spaces.

Abstract The conceptualisation of gentrification and its relationship to displacement remains highly contested within urban studies, which is also reflected in divergent methodological approaches. While there are integrated methodologies which combine measures for both phenomena and allow to estimate the effect of gentrification on the extent of displacement, there is a lack of quantitative approaches which are capable of revealing how neighbourhood upgrading is related to individual displacement specifically. This article addresses this gap by introducing a sequential research design that combines the spatial analysis of socio-economic and real estate upgrading processes at neighbourhood level with a survey-based analysis of displacement. The combination of spatial analysis and tailored primary survey enables us to precisely determine the factors behind displacement at the individual level and distinguish between different forms of (gentrification-related) displacement in systematically selected neighbourhoods. In turn, these displacement processes can be contextualised within differentiated upgrading patterns at neighbourhood level. Thus, the approach bridges the gap between relevant dimensions and scales of gentrification and helps to elucidate their substantive relationship. The methodology is illustrated using the example of the city of Nuremberg, Germany. The displacement survey was conducted in three case study neighbourhoods identified through a systematic, data-driven selection strategy.

Abstract In this article, I discuss the role of literary corpora and literary quotations in the context of digital lexicographical systems of present day German. In section 1, I start off with a diagnosis of current praxis and an important development in copyright legislation. In section 2, I give six reasons for intensifying the use of literary quotations in present day lexicography. In section 3, I give examples of the specific values of literary quotations, also in respect of the artistic nature and the narrative functions of literary texts. In section 4, I delineate augmented research possibilities that come with digital systems which include a corpus component. Section 5 wraps up the main results.

The translation of global sustainability agendas into urban strategies remains a challenge for local governments. Nevertheless, the increasing number of municipalities establishing municipal sustainability management systems and publishing sustainability reports indicates a growing commitment by cities and regions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also points to improvements in the way inputs, outputs, outcomes, and impacts are measured at the local level. This article draws on seven years of experience with the well‐established SDG Indicators for Municipalities in Germany to provide a critical examination of the development and application of sustainable urban development indicators. As significant methodological and data deficits persist, fundamental questions arise for future monitoring approaches—for instance, regarding the necessity of quantifying sustainability aspects and the suitability of the SDGs for local action and monitoring. In advance of a post‐2030 agenda, the utility of the existing SDG framework is increasingly being reassessed due to the existence of thematic gaps regarding sustainable urban development and normative trade‐offs, including those related to social cohesion, basic public services, and the growth paradigm. SDG indicators at the local level naturally reproduce these limitations, unlike adapted monitoring systems that are tailored to local requirements, such as spatial and temporal granularity. Based on theoretical indicator evaluation frameworks and insights from municipal practice, this article identifies seven criteria that should be considered and balanced for the local monitoring of a future sustainability agenda.

This commentary addresses the findings of the study “Housing Construction Needs (More) Land: New Land Take and Infill Development Under Scrutiny”, published by Institute for Housing, Real Estate, Urban and Regional Development (InWIS) at the Ruhr University Bochum und der EBZ Business School Bochum on June 18, 2025. The study concludes that due to barriers to infill development, new land is required for housing construction, and that the 30-hectare land-saving target should be questioned. In our view, this blanket demand is misleading and steers the debate in the wrong direction. Our micro-level empirical evidence shows that housing demand is highly concentrated in growth centres and transport corridors, while other areas are stagnating. A blanket release of land would therefore fuel uncontrolled urban sprawl. Instead of short-sighted instruments, we call for a sustainable housing policy based on a valid, small-scale database. The challenges are local, but the solutions must be conceived regionally and organized cooperatively. We advocate for a planning culture that strengthens regional responsibility and manages development according to actual needs, instead of abandoning land conservation across the board.
