Consultation With the Mother of a Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Comparison of Behavioral Recording Methods
Read moreElevated Atmospheric Levels of Benzene and Benzene-Related Compounds from Unconventional Shale Extraction and Processing: Human Health Concern for Residential Communities.
BACKGROUNDThe advancement of natural gas (NG) extraction across the United States (U.S.) raises concern for potential exposure to hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). Benzene, a HAP and a primary chemical of concern due to its classification as a known human carcinogen, is present in petroleum-rich geologic formations and is formed during the combustion of bypass NG. It is a component in solvents, paraffin breakers, and fuels used in NG extraction and processing (E&P).OBJECTIVESThe objectives of this study are to confirm the presence of benzene and benzene-related compounds (benzene[s]) in residential areas, where unconventional shale E&P is occurring, and to determine if benzene[s] exists in elevated atmospheric concentrations when compared to national background levels.METHODSAmbient air sampling was conducted in six counties in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex with passive samples collected in evacuated 6-L Summa canisters. Samples were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, with sampling performed at variable distances from the facility fence line.RESULTSElevated concentrations of benzene[s] in the atmosphere were identified when compared to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Urban Air Toxics Monitoring Program. The 24-hour benzene concentrations ranged from 0.6 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) to 592 ppbv, with 1-hour concentrations from 2.94 ppbv to 2,900.20 ppbv.CONCLUSIONBenzene is a known human carcinogen capable of multisystem health effects. Exposure to benzene is correlated with bone marrow and blood-forming organ damage and immune system depression. Sensitive populations (children, pregnant women, elderly, immunocompromised) and occupational workers are at increased risk for adverse health effects from elevated atmospheric levels of benzene[s] in residential areas with unconventional shale E&P.

The patient was a 38-year-old woman diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. Steroid pulse therapy and mizoribine was started in late October 2002 and continued for about 10 months, but no apparent therapeutic effect was obtained. During this period, the patient was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. As nephrotic syndrome did not improve, renal biopsy was performed and membranous nephropathy (MN) was diagnosed. After resection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was performed, the urinary protein level decreased rapidly. Since MN caused by nasopharyngeal carcinoma is very rare, this represents an interesting case of malignancy-associated MN.

Read moreEnergetics of proton transfer between carbon atoms (H3CH CH3)−
Abstract Ab initio calculations were carried out to study the potential energy surface of (H3CHCH3)−. The 6–31G* basis set is supplemented by a set of diffuse p functions on both C and H (with a range of exponents for the latter). The binding energy of CH4 and CH3− to form the (H3CHCH3)− complex is about 2 kcal/mol, much smaller than for comparable ionic H‐bonded systems involving O or N atoms. Nearly half of this interaction energy is due to correlation effects, computed at second and third orders of Møller‐Plesset perturbation theory. Correlation is also responsible for substantial reductions in the energy barrier to proton transfer within the complex. This barrier is computed to be 13‒15 kcal/mol at the MP3 level, depending upon the exponent used for the H p functions.

Abstract The synthesis of the tritiated sex pheromone of the saturniid moth Antheraea polyphemus was accomplished by stereospecific T2 reduction of (E)‐hexadec‐6‐en‐11‐yn‐1‐yl acetate. The [11, 12‐3H2]‐(E, Z)‐6, 11‐hexadecadieny 1 acetate was then converted to the corresponding diazoacetate, a behaviorally active photoaffinity label for the A. polyphemus pheromone binding and receptor proteins. Synthesis of the enyne precursors is also described.
