Abstract A super major International Oil Company operating in Asia Pacific was using a hydraulic workover unit (HWU) running drill pipe singles as part of their Plug & Abandonment (P&A) program. A portion of the work scope involved conveying a service packer to act as both a barrier for Blow Out Preventer (BOP) and well head operations along with leak detection as required relating to wellbore integrity. To improve operational efficiency, the operator challenged the industry to develop a 9 5/8″ wireline-deployed plug that would move operations from the HWU into a more efficient and nimble deployment method using electric wireline A 9-5/8 wireline deployed multi-set and multi-latch retrievable plug were developed for the project to unlock significant savings of up to 3-4 days per well. Engineering, manufacturing, and V3 testing of the new plug size was performed within five months, and by June 2024, the 9-5/8″ Plug was installed successfully in the first well. This paper will address the challenges faced, concept selection, rapid engineering and production, systems integrations test, and the successful deployment of the solution The field trial was executed successfully, with the plug set at depths of 2370mMD and 1450mMD. The Plug was subsequently retrieved with wireline after being un-set, re-positioned and re-set for leak detection purposes, thus establishing a new benchmark for wireline-deployed bridge plugs in this size for rig-less applications. After the first run the plug has subsequently been deployed in one more well, with more than 100 wells left in the project. In conclusion this new plug unlocks significant value in both ongoing and upcoming P&A projects globally. The new plug design was based on the established world's first multi-set barrier qualified bridge plug which currently holds more than 500 runs globally. The 9 5/8 plug was also designed to set in challenging environment with corrosion and have a wider range than most plugs in this size ranging from a setting ID up to 9.01″ covering all commonly used 9-5/8″ casing sizes, typically from 40# to 53.5#. An impressive range for one plug with an outer diameter of only 8 inches making it the smallest in its class.
