Two types of gear parts (wheels and pinions) made from low carbon nickel containing structural steel 18CrNiMo7-6 were gas carburized to a standard case depth of 0.7 mm, nitrogen gas- or oil-quenched and tempered to a resulting surface hardness of 60 HRC. The dimensional (shrinkage, growth) and shape distortion (ovalization, out-of-flatness, teething deviations in transversal as well as longitudinal direction), caused by these treatment methods, were measured. Also the effect of position in the test batch on the distortion and core hardness was assessed, in order to find out a relationship between these parameters and a possibility to optimize the process in future.
