Pipeline operators rely on pipeline integrity management frameworks and asset performance management systems to conduct safe hydrocarbon transportation, cope with regulations, and maximize throughput. Internal and external corrosion are leading causes of incidents that lead to spills and downtime. However, a pipeline's metal loss is usually assessed with methods such as inline or manual inspections—with a frequency range from months to years—that don't provide actionable information. Coping with increased demand is pushing operators to boost their utilization rates. Therefore, this article aims to demonstrate how operators can safely increase uptime through data-driven decisions and workforce upskilling by monitoring corrosion.
