Ivy leaf dry extract EA 575 is the first phytotherapeutic drug known to mediate biased β2-receptor signaling
Promoted to the highest evidence class: meta-analysis supports the evidence for EA 575® in treating acute cough
In self-limiting diseases such as acute respiratory infections, patients primarily expect relief of their symptoms, the aim being to reduce suffering and thus improve their quality of life. The results of a meta-analysis of two studies conducted in line with recognized scientific standards show that the positive effects of the dry ivy leaf extract EA 575® are visible and subjectively noticeable not only in the assessment of those administering the treatment, but also in the evaluation by the participating patients.

ABSTRACT Objectives The present study aimed to analyze the association between the prescription of ivy leaf dry extract EA 575 (licensed under the trade name Prospan® in Germany) and the incidence of antibiotic use, incident bacterial complications, and days of sick leave in adult patients with cold diseases. Methods This retrospective cohort study was based on the IQVIA Disease Analyzer database and included adult patients from 1032 general practices in Germany with a documentation of common cold between 2017 and 2020 (index date) and prescription of either EA 575 or an antibiotic drug within 3 days after index date. 1:1 propensity score matching based on age, sex, index month, physician, health insurance status, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index was carried out. Univariable regression models were used to investigate the association between EA 575 prescription and defined outcomes. Results Data of 7034 patients treated with EA 575 and 7034 matched patients receiving an antibiotic were available. EA 575 prescription was associated with significantly lower odds of an antibiotic prescription in the time periods of 4–30 days (OR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.72–0.96) and 31–365 days (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.40–0.48) after the index date. EA 575 prescription was significantly associated with a lower rate of sick leave of more than 7 days (33.0% vs. 37.7%, OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.73–0.90) in patients with any sick leave, as well as with lower odds of a new cough diagnosis (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.85–0.98) when compared to antibiotic prescription. Conclusion Our study provides further evidence that the use of phytopharmaceuticals, in particular ivy leaf dry extract EA 575, could contribute to a reduction in the number of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions for respiratory infection with cough symptoms.

Background: Topical preparations are a common treatment for superficial acute wounds, which at the least do not interfere with healing and ideally result in enhanced wound healing irrespective of microbial colonization. Objective: To examine the effects of a topical antimicrobial gel and its vehicle on the wound healing of standardized, superficial abrasions. Methods: Thirty-three healthy volunteers were enrolled in a double-blinded, randomized, intraindividual comparison study. Three standardized, superficial abrasions were induced on their forearms. A tyrothricin 0.1% gel (Tyrosur® gel; Engelhard Arzneimittel GmbH & Co. KG, Niederdorfelden, Germany) and its vehicle were randomly applied to two of the test areas, and one lesion remained untreated. Results: A significant improvement of wound healing was seen with both tyrothricin 0.1% gel and its corresponding vehicle in the clinical assessment. The mean area under the curve (AUC) of wound healing scores was the same for both preparations and the mean reepithelization scores were comparable at all test points over the entire 12 days. A lower mean AUC representing less reepithelization was found for the untreated test fields. Conclusion: The use of tyrothricin 0.1% gel and its corresponding vehicle resulted in statistically significant improved wound healing with an earlier onset of healing in particular. Based on these results obtained using an abrasive wound model, it can be concluded that the addition of tyrothricin 0.1% to the gel vehicle did not interfere with the improved wound healing seen with the vehicle alone.

Abstract Impacts in rigid multibody systems cause instantaneous jumps in the generalised velocities. Naturally, the velocity after impact depends on the chosen impact law. An impact law should fulfil kinematic, kinetic as well as energy restrictions. In this paper, we study the domain of possible post‐impact velocities for arbitrary impact laws. For single‐contact collisions, this domain is at most one‐dimensional but the domain becomes higher dimensional in the multi‐contact case. The domain of possible post‐impact velocities is a compact convex subset of the tangent space to the configuration manifold. Using a complete canonical parameterisation, the post‐impact velocity of all impact laws can be addressed. For instance, the impact law corresponding to maximal dissipation as well as Newtons (extended) impact law are examples of incomplete canonical parameterisations. These impact laws are not complete as non‐local impact effects are not addressed. Here, we try to find a complete canonical parameterisation which covers non‐local impact effects. Moreover, the relationship between symmetries and conservation laws in this context will be elucidated. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Treatment of Chronic Bronchitis with Ivy Leaf Special Extract – Multicenter Post-Marketing Surveillance Study in 1,350 Patients Background and Objectives: The changes of clinical symptoms and the tolerability of Prospan® acute Effervescent Cough Tablets were investigated in a multicenter, prospective post-marketing surveillance (PMS) study focusing on patients with chronic bronchitis. Patients and Methods: The study included 1,350 male and female patients aged 4 years and above who were treated in one of 135 participating medical practices and who suffered from chronic bronchitis (with or without airway obstruction). During a scheduled observational period of 4 weeks, the patients had to take 1½ or 2 tablets per day (depending on their age), according to the manufacturer’s dosing recommendations, corresponding to 97.5 or 130 mg of dried ivy leaf extract (about 585– 780 mg of drug). Treatment success was assessed by observing the changes in the direct symptoms of chronic bronchitis between the baseline examination and the end of treatment. Safety was evaluated by analyzing adverse events. Results: In comparison to baseline, the following percentages of patients showed improved symptoms or were cured at treatment end: cough 92.2%; expectoration 94.2%; dyspnea 83.1%; respiratory pain 86.9%. In each of the four symptoms at least 38% of the initially affected patients were completely free of complaints. Three patients (0.2%) experienced adverse events in which a causal relationship to the drug under investigation could not be excluded (2× eructation, 1× nausea). Conclusions: Considering the favorable changes in all investigated clinical symptoms as well as the excellent tolerability in children and adults, the ivy leaf extract preparation Prospan acute Effervescent Cough Tablets can be considered as a therapeutic option in alleviating the symptoms of chronic bronchitis.
