A permeability-selective membrane interface was used in conjunction with a quadrupole mass spectrometer for continuous monitoring of trace organic volatile compounds in water. The mechanism is known as pervaporation. The use of this interface eliminated prior sample preparation which is generally required for mass spectrometric or gas chromatography-mass spectrometric measurements. The response of the instrument to several environmentally significant chemicals was investigated. The detection limit of the instrument is in the sub-ppb range with a response time on the order of a few minutes. A linear response of the instrument to all the chemicals used in the present work was observed.
