Digital twins are living digital surrogates of objects and processes from the world around us and serve many purposes in situations where a physical model cannot be used. Digital twins can be considered to still be in their nascent phase, be it in the variety of application domains or in the science of creating and manipulating them. The DIDYMOS-XR project uses digital twins to create large-scale (city-wide) and long-term eXtended Reality (XR) applications. In this paper, we propose three use cases—city planning, city maintenance, and city tourism—along with an industrial use case for manufacturing environments, demonstrated through evaluation sites in Germany and Spain. The paper introduces cutting-edge solutions in the creation, simulation, and manipulation of DTs, including advancements in 3D scene reconstruction, data enhancement, data compression, sensor fusion, localization, rendering, and scene understanding. Additionally, we address the ethical and privacy challenges of digital twin systems and propose strategies for mitigating these issues. This work offers a comprehensive framework for creating semantically rich, scalable, and interactive digital twins, providing valuable insights for diverse applications in urban planning, maintenance, tourism, and industrial optimization.

Surround view systems are becoming more and more important in Autonomous Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems where multiple perception tasks have been developed in order to solve the needs in this field. However, there is a lack of literature for multi-object trackers that deals with multiple cameras in automotive setups. In this paper, we propose a system to tackle multi-object tracking with inter-camera object identification using fisheye cameras covering a 360º view in real time. We provide results from a custom ground truth annotated sequence using CARLA simulator.

The aim of this work is to generate a Gold Standard signal to assess the alertness state of drivers based on the Electrooculogram (EOG) dynamics derived from a polysomnography device. Different EOG patterns have been analyzed in order to determine the relation between ocular activity and sleep onset while doing complex tasks. More than 15 h of laboratory tests were analyzed in order to detect drowsiness while doing different cognitive activities. The proposed method has a sensitivity of 92.41 % and a Predictive Positive Value (VPP) of 93.41 % in detecting drowsiness in laboratory conditions. The results show that the proposed index may be promising to assess the alertness state of real drivers.

One of the main causes of car accidents is drowsiness. There have been many studies regarding driving monitoring systems in the past few years, although most of them are focused in simulator environments. This paper presents a system to detect drowsiness patterns in real driving environments, where many external conditions need to be taken into account. Initial tests were done in simulator, followed by tests in real vehicles. Although two different approaches have been developed, this paper is focused in the inadequate driving identification based on the steering movements. Its sub-modules are also presented, with a special focus on the active driving detector.

Future generations of electric vehicles (EVs) will require a new level of convergence between computer and automotive architectures, with the electric power train being a mechatronic system that includes a multitude of plug and play devices, embedded power and signal processing hardware, software and high level algorithms. This paper discusses the current advances in the computing devices, communication systems and management algorithms embedded in the EV building blocks used for implementing the distributed energy and propulsion architectures required for high efficiency, reduced complexity and safe redundancy.

Existing solutions for TMC (Traffic Message Channel) antennas in navigation devices are based on long wire antennas that are externally attached and cause many handling problems considering antenna positioning. This paper shows new solutions with compact external TMC antennas as well as internal antennas integrated in the navigation device. The possibility is introduced how to bring the antenna into the navigation device without increasing its volume or having influence on the existing design.
