Robert (Bob) Hansen took a big picture view of the world of antennas. He wanted to get a reasonable understanding of most, if not all, of the various types of antennas, arrays of antennas, electromagnetic materials, etc. Whenever a new antenna concept appeared, Bob would investigate the fundamentals and report to the community on the true capability limits for that concept.
