“I Have to Be Very Intentional About How I Communicate:” Black Women Administrators’ Identity Navigation in Predominantly White Institutions
ABSTRACT This qualitative narrative inquiry explores how Black women navigate their identities at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) as entry-level student affairs professionals. Our framework is rooted in Black Feminist thought to consider how Black women are impacted by identity and supervisory relationships in the workplace. Using semi-structured interviews, we explore Black women’s upbringing, supervisory relationships, and current workplace navigation. Our findings reveal how participants navigated their social identities based on prior socialization for workplace assimilation and by balancing forced identity suppression and authenticity. These findings are particularly important for institutions wishing to diversify the leadership pipeline, increase retention of new student affairs professionals, and incorporate inclusive supervision practices.

Hermaphroditic spawning by the gonochoric pillar coral Dendrogyra cylindrus
Scleractinian corals typically reproduce sexually as either gonochoric (separate male and female) or hermaphroditic (producing both eggs and sperm) colonies. The Caribbean pillar coral Dendrogyra cylindrus has been classified as gonochoric, but multi-year spawning observations at a Florida Keys site revealed incidences of hermaphroditism. Separate clonal colonies (ramets) of a single genet released either male or female gametes. Furthermore, 22% of observed ramets produced both eggs and sperm within different regions of a single colony. Over multiple years, one ramet switched from female to hermaphrodite, one from male to hermaphrodite, and one from hermaphrodite to male. Proposed evolutionary mechanisms include size- or age-based energy allocation, environmental energy allocation, or chemically induced change in a single-sex region. Because of the low population density of D. cylindrus in the Florida Keys, sexual partners are scarce, and hermaphroditism may be a strategy to yield higher rates of successful sexual reproduction. The findings also have implications for future restoration efforts aiming to strategically outplant individuals to maximize in situ fertilization.

In the previous chapter, we created the beginnings of a useful database and several interactive website pages. However, the administrator was not able to edit all the member information. In this chapter, we will provide the ability to edit the address and telephone number information. This will be achieved by using the Addresses menu button. In addition, we will add an additional Title field to the database. This field will also be editable through the Addresses menu button. The folder and filing system for the PHP pages will be tidied up to reduce the clutter. More information will be placed in folders for easier discovery and retrieval. The previous interactive pages had a minimum of user input validation and sanitation. This chapter will introduce a more secure system.

Identification and Characterization of Proteins Involved in Nuclear Organization Using Drosophila GFP Protein Trap Lines
BackgroundStrains from a collection of Drosophila GFP protein trap lines express GFP in the normal tissues where the endogenous protein is present. This collection can be used to screen for proteins distributed in the nucleus in a non-uniform pattern.Methodology/Principal FindingsWe analyzed four lines that show peripheral or punctate nuclear staining. One of these lines affects an uncharacterized gene named CG11138. The CG11138 protein shows a punctate distribution in the nuclear periphery similar to that of Drosophila insulator proteins but does not co-localize with known insulators. Interestingly, mutations in Lamin proteins result in alterations in CG11138 localization, suggesting that this protein may be a novel component of the nuclear lamina. A second line affects the Decondensation factor 31 (Df31) gene, which encodes a protein with a unique nuclear distribution that appears to segment the nucleus into four different compartments. The X-chromosome of males is confined to one of these compartments. We also find that Drosophila Nucleoplasmin (dNlp) is present in regions of active transcription. Heat shock leads to loss of dNlp from previously transcribed regions of polytene chromosome without redistribution to the heat shock genes. Analysis of Stonewall (Stwl), a protein previously found to be necessary for the maintenance of germline stem cells, shows that Stwl is present in a punctate pattern in the nucleus that partially overlaps with that of known insulator proteins. Finally we show that Stwl, dNlp, and Df31 form part of a highly interactive network. The properties of other components of this network may help understand the role of these proteins in nuclear biology.Conclusions/SignificanceThese results establish screening of GFP protein trap alleles as a strategy to identify factors with novel cellular functions. Information gained from the analysis of CG11138 Stwl, dNlp, and Df31 sets the stage for future studies of these proteins.
