Host Communities and Visitor Management
- May 02, 2025
- Lia Bassa
The chapter aimed to define cultural heritage as a concept. In addition, it establishes the importance of linking cultural heritage and knowledge to host communities and visitor management. Recognising and listing the tangible and intangible aspects of heritage, such as the natural environment, historical buildings, monuments, traditions, and customs, is essential for effective heritage management and is key to sustainable development for host communities. Educational programs, research, and community engagement initiatives can bridge the gap between heritage and knowledge, which is a heritage to be transmitted, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for cultural heritage. It is also connected to cultural tourism, which can enhance its visibility and economic value, draw visitors, and generate revenue for maintenance and jobs for locals. Well-managed sustainable tourism practices preserve heritage sites while providing economic benefits to the local and the visiting communities.
