National privacy laws diverge between the European Union and United States, hindering transatlantic health data exchange and slowing AI-driven medical innovation. In response, the German Ministry of Health launched the pre-competitive Data for Health initiative, leading to the BRIDGE Pilot Study (2023-2025), a researcher-led effort to address this regulatory and legal gap. Using a mixed-methods approach, including structured surveys (n = 56 expert responses), ranking of steps via relative importance indexing, and 4 Delphi meetings, experts co-developed a practical framework composed of 30 steps in 3 consecutive phases for legally compliant and technically interoperable EU-US health data collaboration. The framework emphasizes early data protection assessments, secure transfer protocols, and iterative governance checks. The final consensus framework provides a stepwise guide to navigate regulatory and legal complexities and operationalize cross-border research. Ongoing input from researchers and stakeholders will help ensure the framework remains adaptable and provides a clear, scalable foundation for cross-border health data exchange.

In August 2024, the Nature Restoration Regulation came into force in the European Union (EU). This landmark legislation on ecosystem restoration may significantly improve the state of European's biodiversity and could profoundly contribute to implementing the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. To realize this potential, the EU Member States need to underpin the objectives of the Nature Restoration Regulation with effective measures. Here, we highlight five factors for the success of national nature restoration policies: increased acceptance of nature restoration and landscape change; agreed quantitative and qualified national restoration targets; improved coordination of nature restoration with other land uses; supportive organizational and legal framework conditions; and increased attractiveness of nature restoration to land users and land owners. Drawing on recommendations developed for the German context by three national policy advisory bodies, we suggest that these factors also hold relevance for advancing nature restoration policies in other EU Member States.

We live in a challenging geoeconomic environment. Economic resilience and economic security have replaced globalization, yet Covid-19 and Deepseek have shown that the world is borderless. Geopolitically, tensions between the like-minded states of the West and Russia, China, and North Korea have been described as “World War III.” Changes in US leadership also signal shifts in the German-US relationship, challenging Germany’s security environment. In this complex landscape, it is imperative for Germany to formulate an appropriate response – a grand strategy – that articulates the interests of the country, recognizes the intertwined dynamics of economics and security, and is informed by a global perspective that extends beyond Europe. A comprehensive review of regional policies and issue specific policies is essential.

Abstract Background Greenspaces have been proven to promote mental health and wellbeing. Research is conducted in diverse fields with various methods. However, studies and theoretical concepts frequently fail to address or define the scale of the environment in question. Furthermore, the different types of greenspace at the same scale are often inconsistently or inaccurately defined. Such limitations may impede the comparability of results and interdisciplinary understanding. The aims were therefore: 1. To provide a quantitative overview of the combinations of greenspace and mental health measures used at the ecological scales; 2. To embed the results in the existing theoretical background. Methods A systematic search and a scoping review were conducted, applying an PEO framework. The data was charted with an extraction table and analysed with regard to the ecological scales which are: landscapes, ecosystems/land-use types, and species/natural elements. Preliminary Results Generally, distinct greenspace measures are used at different scales, while the mental health measures do not show such a clear pattern. The “landscape” scale is most often assessed via GIS approaches. The scales “ecosystems” and “species” are mostly investigated via interventions. Overall, the “ecosystems” scale is the most frequent in both research and theory. Qualitative mental health measures often focus on ecosystems. However, the qualitative theoretical concepts are based on landscapes, e.g. Therapeutic Landscapes. Species and natural elements are rarely directly addressed by both studies and theories. Conclusions We propose increased attention to the types and scales of green and nature at both the theoretical and the practical research level. Established ecological scales can provide a common basis for interdisciplinary research and improve the comparability of studies. This can elucidate the potential differences in the impact of the diverse forms and dimensions of nature on human health. Key messages • The methods employed to assess the relation between greenspace and mental health vary according to the ecological scale. Ecosystems are the main focus in research and theory, species the least. • The type and scale of nature should be considered in environmental health research and theory. Established ecological scales can provide a basis for interdisciplinary comparability and understanding.
