Facebook and the cultivation of ethnic diversity perceptions and attitudes
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to apply cultivation theory to social network sites by investigating how Facebook uses cultivates users' ethnic diversity perceptions and attitudes.Design/methodology/approachThe authors’ investigations include an online and offline survey study with 476 Facebook users and a follow-up experiment with 75 individuals.FindingsThe authors provide empirical support that Facebook use cultivates ethnic diversity perceptions and ethnic diversity-related attitudes. They show that Facebook use relates to perceptions of ethnic minorities that resemble the world on Facebook that is characterized by high ethnic diversity. The authors further demonstrate that the cultivation of ethnic diversity-related attitudes is mediated by diversity perceptions related to users' close social environment.Research limitations/implicationsFuture research should consider culturally and educationally diverse samples as well as longitudinal research designs to address external validity and causality issues.Practical implicationsAlgorithms determining the content users are exposed should be thoughtfully curated to avoid attitudinal and ideological polarization.Social implicationsFacebook can play an important role in positively shaping intergroup relations, thereby countering negative outgroup attitudes, social anxieties and radical right-wing parties.Originality/valueThe authors’ studies extend the scope of cultivation research by identifying a new media vehicle as a source of cultivation influences and shed light on the cultivation-based process of attitude change on social network sites.

Read morePoland: CSR in an Emerging Market from Transition Until Today
With the political and economic transformation in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989 and the increasing participation of this region into the processes of Globalisation, Poland became an emerging market. This process of economic development still continues today and as a major result of this, the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Poland was and still is involved in a constant and dynamic process. This paper will focus on these changes in the field of CSR under the light of these economic and social processes by providing historical overview and an analysis of the status quo. Furthermore, the paper will examine some of the well-known case studies that will take into account Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), Civil Societies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO).
Read moreFounder–inventors and their investors: Spurring firm survival and growth
Abstract Research Summary Drawing on insights from resource orchestration literature and the competence‐based perspective, we argue that founders involved in inventive activities display firm‐idiosyncratic founder–inventor competences critical to the firm's performance. This effect is enhanced by venture capital investors. To test our hypotheses, we use panel data from 1,498 firms. Controlling for founders' technical skills, our results reveal that founder involvement in R&D increases firm survival and growth. Furthermore, venture capitalists leverage founders' engagement in inventive activity to achieve even higher growth. Our findings imply that continuous application of founder–inventor competences serves to catalyze effective resource orchestration and strengthen new venture performance. Managerial Summary The role of founders and founder competences is critical as firms progress along their life cycles, whereby founders face decisions about which tasks deserve their attention and which ones they can delegate to their employees, middle‐management, and/or new hires. One key strategic choice for founders is whether to engage in inventive activities themselves and remain engaged. Based on a large firm dataset, we find that founders' inventive activities spur survival and growth. Furthermore, venture capital investors leverage the effect on growth because they often bring in their own industry expertise, turn attention to the core capabilities, and revitalize the top management team. These investor activities enable founders to focus their attention on areas in which their involvement best supports the firm's performance, namely inventive activities.
Read moreThe Influence of MNEs on CSR in Poland
The historical and economic development of Poland had an immense influence on its civic awareness which therefore differs compared to other countries. Due to its late connection to global markets and trade, the influence of MNEs in terms of regulations and responsible business practices is relatively high. The characteristics of MNEs lead to governance gaps regarding their local e.g. polish branches. Based on their assumed power, MNEs get criticized because of their possible negative impact on the society. Therefor this article examines factors which foster MNEs towards a CSR oriented behaviour. The evolution of CSR in Poland is shown based on the example of the food retail industry. It shows similarities between the development stages of a country and the stages of CSR of local branches of MNEs from immoral management to societal marketing. Further the current status of CSR in MNEs in Poland gets observed. Comparing the concepts of CSR and societal marketing some external influence factors for MNEs will be defined besides the well-known stakeholder approach. As a special stakeholder NGOs and their role as a watchdog in Poland will be shown, as well as the change of their self-perception and especially the role of the RBF.
