Interorganizational Collaboration in Innovation Networks: An Agent Based Model for Responsible Research and Innovation in Additive Manufacturing
The significant progress in scientific research and innovation has led to the need for a new paradigm to legitimise the innovation process in society and politics. The European Union, with the Horizon 2020 framework program and Horizon Europe, institutionalises this change by defining the concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI), aiming at greater inclusiveness and sustainability in the research and innovation processes. This paper aimed to present an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the dynamics between the different actors that cooperate within networks during the innovation process, taking the inclinations toward RRI practices into account. The different types of agent, their characteristics, and the different strategies that they follow have been formulated within the Horizon 2020 project I AM RRI-Webs of Innovation Value Chains (IVCs) of Additive Manufacturing (AM) under consideration of RRI. Besides, some experiments are reported to validate the model, ensuring its rigor and making our model a useful tool for policymakers, assisting them in defining strategic guidelines for disseminating and encouraging RRI best practices and defining the critical factors of the innovative cooperative process.

Micro polymer parts can be usually manufactured either by conventional injection moulding (IM) or by micro-injection moulding (µIM). In this paper, functional analysis was used as a tool to investigate the performances of IM and µIM used to manufacture the selected industrial component. The methodology decomposed the production cycle phases of the two processes and attributed functions to parts features of the two investigated machines. The output of the analysis was aimed to determine casual chains leading to the final outcome of the process. Experimental validation of the functional analysis was carried out moulding the same micro medical part in thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material using the two processes by means of multi-cavity moulds. The produced batches were assessed using a precision scale and a high accuracy optical instrument. The measurement results were compared using capability indexes. The data-driven comparison identified and quantified the correlations between machine design and part quality, demonstrating that the µIM machine technology better meets the accuracy and precision requirements typical of micro manufacturing productions.
Read moreEnergy Management in Hospitals: Evolution of a Methodology
The impact of properly managing energy in hospitals is significant, due to the high bills and polluting emissions, and is complex, due to the wide range of energy consuming equipment to be kept always running. Energy efficiency plans in hospitals, which are pivotal in the European wide effort to redevelop existing buildings, have to be carried out as a part of a wider redesign process and must encompass complex data analysis and modeling. Based on the activity carried out within the European funded project H2020/MSCA/STEER, this work elaborates on the methodology, as tested on a building information model of a health center in Sicily, to identify positive and negative aspects of energy-related technology options to keep hospitals efficient. The main steps of the methodology carried out in the health center were: (1) collect data and input it in a digital model; (2) create and test a simplified quasi-steady state model of the building; (3) create a dynamic simulation model of the building; (4) run dynamic and simplified model simulations of the energy performance of the building; (5) compare results obtained from the two models in various scenarios, showing that the relevant differences after indicative interventions and parameter changes are equivalent.
Read moreEFFECTS OF A MODIFIED VITRECTOMY PROBE IN SMALL-GAUGE VITRECTOMY
Thorough this experimental study, the physic features of a modified 23-gauge vitrectomy probe were evaluated in vitro. A modified vitrectomy probe to increase vitreous outflow rate with a small-diameter probe, that also minimized tractional forces on the retina, was created and tested. The "new" probe was created by drilling an opening into the inner duct of a traditional 23-gauge probe with electrochemical or electrodischarge micromachining. Both vitreous outflow and tractional forces on the retina were examined using experimental models of vitreous surgery. The additional opening allowed the modified probe to have a cutting rate of 5,000 cuts per minute, while sustaining an outflow approximately 45% higher than in conventional 23-gauge probes. The modified probe performed two cutting actions per cycle, not one, as in standard probes. Because tractional force is influenced by cutting rate, retinal forces were 2.2 times lower than those observed with traditional cutters. The modified probe could be useful in vitreoretinal surgery. It allows for faster vitreous removal while minimizing tractional forces on the retina. Moreover, any available probe can be modified by creating a hole in the inner duct.
Read moreSkills and wills: the keys to identify the right team in collaborative innovation platforms
The access to external expertise and collaboration initiatives became an undeniable strategy for highly innovative sectors. Innovation intermediaries have gained a prominent role in this scenario, and crowdsourcing platforms reached notable results. However, identifying right competencies with demanded innovation is a critical issue. Research is needed in the domain of matchmaking mechanisms for identifying the necessary skills to fulfil different kinds of problems in order to build effective collaborative teams. This paper investigates different approaches adopted in crowdsourcing and main characteristics of teams operating in these contexts. Thus, a set of critical issues is highlighted and a structured team-building methodology for finding suitable solvers in crowdsourcing challenges is presented. Such method is grounded on natural language processing (NLP) and semantic ontologies fulfilling some of the identified criticalities. The description is supported by a case study conducted within a self-developed crowdsourcing platform.

Velocity profiles of blood platelets and red blood cells flowing in arterioles of the rabbit mesentery.
Velocity profiles were determined in rabbit mesenteric arterioles (diameter 17-32 micron). A good spatial resolution was obtained by using the blood platelets as small and natural markers of flow, providing for the first time in vivo detailed, quantitative information about the shape of the velocity profiles in microvessels. In some experiments red blood cell velocity profiles were recorded as well. Easy detection of the cells of interest could be achieved by labelling them selectively with a fluorescent dye and visualizing them by intravital fluorescence video microscopy, using flashed illumination. Pairs of flashes were given with a short, preset time interval between both flashes, yielding in one TV picture two images of the same cell displaced over a certain distance for the given time interval. Velocity and mean radial position of cells, flowing within an optical section around the median plane of the vessel, were determined. The shape of the velocity profiles of platelets and red blood cells was similar. The profiles were flattened as compared to a parabola, both in systole and diastole. Vessel diameter did not change measurably during the cardiac cycle. As an index of the degree of blunting of the profiles, the ratio of the maximal and mean velocity of the profile was used, which is 2 for a parabola and 1 for complete plug flow. The index ranged from 1.39 to 1.54 (median 1.50), and increased with vessel diameter. Calculations showed that the blunting of the profiles cannot be explained by an influence of the finite depth of the optical section.
