The study's aim was to assess a broad range of declarative and nondeclarative memory functions in schizophrenia to identify areas of impairment versus relative preservation. Participants included 40 schizophrenia outpatients and 30 demographically comparable community residents. All participants were administered a battery assessing declarative memory (verbal learning, working memory, semantic memory, remote memory, verbal retention) and nondeclarative memory (procedural learning, priming). To control for order effects, the battery was divided into three parts of approximately equal length with order of administration counterbalanced across study participants. The results showed persons with schizophrenia to be significantly impaired relative to community residents in verbal learning, working memory, semantic memory, remote memory, and priming. In contrast, the two groups were comparable in verbal retention and procedural learning. In the schizophrenia group, priming ability best discriminated past year's vocational status. In sum, the findings indicate a specific pattern of impairment and preservation of memory functioning in schizophrenia. Skill (procedural) learning and retention of learned, declarative verbal information across a delay appear intact, while all other areas measured appear impaired.

Videotaped role play was an effective staff development strategy used as an initial exercise in a five-part class to update the pain management skills of experienced nurses. It engaged the participants in learning and stimulated discussion and provided concrete feedback of current clinical practices for comparison with the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research pain management guidelines (Acute Pain Management Guideline Panel, 1992).
Read moreIntra-atrial myxomas, clinical-pathologic correlation based on two case studies including historical review.
The two cases of left-sided myxomas are reported with both patients having had uneventful cardiac surgery. One patient had an uneventful recovery and is doing well, whereas the second patient (female) had a complicating cerebrovascular accident. This patient was thought to have myxoma embolization; however, histopathologic verification could not be obtained. This latter patient had of course a higher risk of developing thromboembolization, due to the concomitant valve surgery procedure. The clinical, operative and pathologic studies confirm the lesions as primary myxomas and support and amplify the diagnostic concept of those lesions being of neoplastic nature, and countermand the previously commonly held concept of the thrombotic nature of myxomas. The nature of the myxoma is the primitive mesenchymal vasoformative cells of the atrial subendocardium, which is equivalent to the subendocardial cushion cell.

Abstract: This report describes the performance of an appendectomy during routine right inguinal herniorrhaphy. A brief review of the more recent literature on appendectomy as part of inguinal herniorrhaphy is presented along with the reasons why the prophylactic use of antibiotics does not seem warranted.
