Performing Oratory and Writing History in Honorific Inscriptions: the Case of Dexippus of Athens
Abstract This paper discusses the epigraphical evidence about P. Herennius Dexippus of Athens, with a view to exploring the extent to which inscriptions may enhance our understanding of the close connection between rhetoric and historiography in the Greek cities in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The Dexippus Inscription ( IG II² 3669), which was engraved on a statue-base, comprises an honorific decree and epigram that praise Dexippus, the 3rd c. AD Athenian rhetor and historian best known for his historiographical account of the wars between Rome and the Goths (‘Scythians’), for his outstanding record as both a rhetor and a syngrapheus preoccupied with history. This particular honorific inscription shows the close connection that was made, also in the wider public imagination and honorific discourse, between the disciplines of rhetoric and historiography in the Roman Imperial period.
Read moreOffering food and alcohol in Chinese and English: a contrastive pragmatic perspective
Abstract In this paper, we compare conventions of offering food and alcohol in Chinese and English. We define offering as an interaction ritual because in many linguacultures, food and drink are offered by following certain conventions, the observing of which is a ritually sacred duty for the host. Foreign residents in China are often irritated by Chinese conventions of offering food and drink. We try to explain such irritations by investigating how Chinese and ‘Western’ offering conventions differ from one another. Our framework brings together speech acts and interaction ritual theory. We first present relevant experiences of English-speaking foreigners living in China. We then conduct a contrastive pragmatic study of English and Chinese food and alcohol offering conventions, followed by an interpretation of the irritations reported by our panel of foreigners through our contrastive outcomes.
Read moreStudying Small Talk from a pragmatic angle: An introduction
Abstract In this introduction to the present special issue, we first define the notion of Small Talk from a pragmatic point of view and interconnect Small Talk with interaction ritual. Following this, we point out why a speech act-based approach is particularly useful to study Small Talk in a rigorous and replicable way. We also introduce the speech act framework used by all the studies in the special issue. Finally, we introduce the contents of the special issue.
Read moreHolographic correlators of semiclassical states in defect CFTs
We set up the computation of correlation functions for operators that are dual to semiclassical string states in strongly coupled defect conformal field theories (dCFTs). In the dCFT that is dual to the D3-D5 probe-brane system, we calculate the correlation function of two heavy operators perturbatively, in powers of the conformal ratio. We find that the leading term agrees with the prediction of the operator product expansion (OPE). In the case of two heavy BMN operators, we find agreement in subleading orders as well.

Read moreViewing Jerusalem in the<i>Letter of Aristeas</i>: Aesthetics, Experience, and Empire
This article examines the narrator’s viewing of Jerusalem and Judea, the Jerusalem Temple, and the high priest’s performance of the liturgy in the Letter of Aristeas (§§83–120). The first section considers the aesthetics that Aristeas views as operative in Jerusalem and demonstrates how his art-critical analysis of Jewish objects reveals them to follow Greek aesthetics more closely than Alexandrian artworks, which instead bespeak imperial excess. The second section proposes that, although he may appear to be on a military reconnaissance, the Letter highlights Aristeas’ experience of witnessing and being overwhelmed by the high priest Eleazar performing the liturgy. In concluding, it suggests that Aristeas’ mind-altering experience of viewing the liturgy in Jerusalem has great import for the narrative of the Torah’s translation into Greek. Telling the story of a Jewish translation involves a Greek transformation.
Read moreLive Vessels’ Monitoring using Geographic Information and Internet of Things
The purpose of this paper is to present the GIS Vessels Monitoring Platform, an integration platform, which collects information from various, heterogeneous internal and external sources and represents the collected information in a uniform way using a Geographical Information System. Furthermore, the collected information from Internet of Things (IoT) data sources for various critical parameters, such as the engine performance, gas emissions, navigation and vessel performance, is further used for analysis and as an input to both a decision support and an alerting system operated by the Maritime Company that monitors the vessels. More specifically, the paper discusses how the platform provides the management company and their departments with all the necessary information for monitoring a vessel in near real time.
Read moreThe Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Entrepreneurship: Examining the Cases of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates
Abstract Purpose: The world has been impacted distinctively by the Covid-19 outbreak. The economic recession in 2020 and 2021 is predicted to become the most intense since World War II. This chapter explores the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic crisis on entrepreneurship and different activities, emphasizing developing economies. Design/methodology/approach: The work aims first on the major crises that could impact entrepreneurial activity triggered by the pandemic. The authors briefly study the literature on the previous health crisis and its impacts on entrepreneurship. Then, under Covid-19, the authors illustrated the navigational prospects for creativity and entrepreneurship. Findings: Our research indicates that the pandemic’s impact on creativity and entrepreneurship would be adverse but not hugely harmful. A new opportunity ecosystem under COVID-19 is respected and researched for innovation and entrepreneurship. Simultaneously, the incentives provided by the COVID-19 pandemic for consumer e-commerce adoption in Saudi Arabia are being addressed. Originality/value: This is probably the first chapter of the book focusing on the impact on the Covid-19 pandemic entrepreneurship. It directly discusses the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on both the global economy and entrepreneurship dynamics. It also recommends fascinating future-oriented, relevant research areas about helping entrepreneurs solve it and what new prospects are developing for them.
Read moreThe Panathenaic Games: Entertaining the Goddess
This chapter looks at the elaborate games which entertained Athena and simultaneously allowed the human participants to show off their prowess. These contests made the penteteric festival into a very different occasion from the Little Panathenaia, and they provided an important reason for visitors to come to Athens. This chapter asks exactly how individuals competed in the games over their long history. The games included musical, athletic and hippic events open to all participants, but also individual hippic contests and team competitions which were limited to Athenian males, who represented their tribes. Participation in the restricted contests served to display the (Athenian) citizen status of the competitors, and it set them apart from other individuals from other cities. The games picked up on some of the festival’s stories and themes, especially the military theme, which set the occasion apart from the Panhellenic games. The pyrrhiche and the apobatic race tied directly into some of the celebration’s most important stories, and they emphasised the close connections between the goddess and the Athenians.
