The Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (SUPPH) is an instrument used to measure self-reported self-efficacy in patient populations. Self-efficacy has a major impact on quality of life and psychological well-being. Previous findings of dimensionality of the SUPPH vary, and cultural differences exist suggesting the need for further investigation and psychometric testing to establish construct validity of the SUPPH in different cultures. The purpose of this study was to examine the factorial structure of the Chinese version of the SUPPH (C-SUPPH). Using reports from 764 oncology patients in China, the factorial structure of the C-SUPPH was assessed via 2 analytical strategies. First-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) models were used to examine the dimensionality of the C-SUPPH; a second-order CFA was used to determine the existence of a factorial structure hierarchy of the C-SUPPH. Compared with the 2- and 4-factor solutions, the 3-factor CFA of the C-SUPPH had a better fit with the data (comparative fit index = 0.94, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.94, root-mean-square error of approximation = 0.05, the close-fit test P = .565, and standardized root-mean-square residual = 0.04). Our findings confirmed the 3-scale structure: Positive Attitude, Stress Reduction, and Making Decisions; together, the 3 factors represent an underlying higher-order factor, that of general self-care self-efficacy. The C-SUPPH has a valid factorial structure and can be readily applied to studying self-efficacy in Chinese patients who are diagnosed with cancers. Our findings provide support for a culturally sensitive, reliable, and valid self-efficacy measure (the C-SUPPH) of Chinese adult cancer patients' self-care self-efficacy.

One of the pleasures of Civil War history comes from its multifaceted nature, as no matter the angle or approach to the crisis, compelling stories always emerge. Take Connecticut, for instance: as a relatively small northern state, far removed from the front lines of the devastation engulfing much of the country, Connecticut's role in the chaos of the 1860s has remained largely—some might say justifiably—obscure. In this book Matthew Warshauer convincingly, if unevenly, argues that to fully comprehend the impact of the Civil War—and its racial implications in particular—requires an understanding of the commitment of northern states like Connecticut to the conflict. The strength of Warshauer's work lies in his recognition that while Connecticut's participation in the Civil War generated “an outpouring of support” that permanently transformed the state, “it would be a mistake to conclude that such dedication reflected any type of unified war sentiment” (p. 6). Politics take...

Fatigue, rated by adolescents as the most distressing symptom experienced during cancer treatment, is essential to the successful clinical care of patients of every culture and nationality. Efforts to provide relief from such symptom, in any area of the world, have been hampered by the lack of reliable and valid instruments used to measure fatigue. Our aims were to examine the semantic, conceptual, and normative equivalence of the Chinese version of the Fatigue Scale-Adolescent (FS-A-C) to the original Fatigue Scale-Adolescent (FS-A) and to estimate the reliability and validity of the FS-A-C. We recruited 51 Taiwanese adolescents in various stages of different types of cancer in this cross-sectional study. Results indicated that the initial panel estimates of semantic, conceptual, and normative equivalence of the FS-A-C with the original instrument (FS-A) were positive. The FS-A-C had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach alpha =.89) and moderate-to-high content validity (content validity index ranges from 87% to 100%). In addition, the FS-A-C achieved known-groups validity (anemic adolescents reporting higher fatigue than nonanemic adolescents do) and initial construct validity (a significant association between the FS-A-C and the Anxious/Depressed subscale). Its use in measuring the intensity of fatigue in adolescents is likely to yield accurate assessments of their fatigue that could prompt clinical efforts to relieve their fatigue-related distress.

Abstract The recent detection of such trace constituents as germane, the tetrahydride of germanium GeH4, in the atmosphere of Jupiter has generated considerable interest in both the chemistry and structure of the Jovian atmosphere. With this in mind, the detection of GeH4 in the Jovian atmosphere is discussed, and computer simulated absorption profiles of the J-multiplets R(0)-R(10) under Jovian atmospheric conditions are shown.
