A diverse range of topics are covered in this issue of Health and Social Care Chaplaincy, namely: (i) end of life care, (ii) chaplaincy boundaries, (iii) moral injury, (iv) suicide, and (v) the increasingly important issue of electronic patient records. This issue also includes, once again, a number of book reviews. Finally, we welcome two new Co-Editors to the HSCC team, and note an upcoming European conference planned for 2024 focusing on spiritual care interventions.

BackgroundIt is well established that the actions and behaviour of care home workers are fundamental to the well‐being of the people they care for. They not only deliver basic care but through their day‐to‐day presence provide an underlying continuity for residents, many of whom will have dementia or other cognitive problems. This can have many positive psychological and social benefits. A variety of ethnographic approaches have been used to explore the broader social and cultural dimensions of dementia care work. Similarly, there is a growing body of work applying micro‐level approaches such as conversation analysis (CA) to describe the interactional mechanics of specific care skills.StrategyWe outline what ethnography and CA are, how they work as stand‐alone methodologies and how they have been used in care work and dementia care settings. A working illustration is given of how the two approaches may be integrated.DiscussionDementia care workers occupy a uniquely tenuous sociopolitical and professional position within healthcare. If they are to progress to a more professional status there is a pressing need for standardized systems of training to be developed. As has been common practice in most other fully professionalized sectors of healthcare, this training needs to be backed up by an understanding of how effective care work is undertaken at the micro‐level. For it to be practically relevant to care workers it also needs to have been informed by the wider social context in which it occurs.ConclusionWe argue that elements of ethnography and CA can be usefully combined to provide the fully contextualized micro‐level descriptions of care work practice that will be needed if current moves towards the greater professionalization of care work are to continue.Patient or Public ContributionThe authors undertake a significant amount of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement and study codesign with members of the public, care workers and people living with dementia. Our engagement work with care staff and family carers undertaken as part of a current National Institute for Health Research study exploring naturalistic care worker skills (see acknowledgements) has been particularly relevant in shaping this article.

ABSTRACTLearning to live with frailty and finitude is both a lifelong agenda and particular to the wisdom of ageing. The desire for long life, therefore, must include a recognition that forever is finite. Being finite, as the term is used here, is the condition of being limited that defines humanness. Facing finitude includes an awareness of mortality, frailty, and death. This essay explores the benefits of accepting both dependence and interdependence, agency and waiting, and receiving and giving ourselves in self-forgetful ways. The whole of life, including growing old, is gift to be received with gratitude and worked on with courage. The wisdom of growing older begins with accepting the inevitability of ageing without becoming ‘old’. Facing limits does not diminish curiosity or the desire to learn or make new friends. And if we listen, ageing persons will teach us how to accept this gift of years with all its ambiguity and paradox and pass it on. We hold this paradoxical wisdom of ageing only long enough to give it away.

This submission includes the overview, science timeline, reference design, WBS, and mine status sections of the Homestake collaboration's Reference Design Project Book. The Project Book describes the specific plan for converting the Homestake Gold Mine into a facility for physics, earth science, and engineering. The proposed developments on the 7400- and 4850-ft levels are presented, along with the plans for adapting Homestake's existing infrastructure for science. The plan differs substantially from the conceptual design for the National Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory proposed in June, 2001.

This paper provides a preliminary examination of individual self-provision of housing in Scotland; that is, instances where individuals are directly involved in the production of their own house, rather than buying a house on the market. After a brief overview of the history of individual self-provision in Britain, the characteristics of the sector in Britain, and particularly in Scotland, are outlined. The core of the paper reports the results of a pilot survey of self-provision in Scotland. Four issues are examined: the type of self-provision; land availability; relationships with commercial interests; and local housing systems and access. It is concluded that self-provision is an important but mostly unrecognised source of new housing provision, whose incidence depends crucially on the nature of local housing systems and the extent to which planning policies are favourable in terms of land release and development control.

Elastic-plastic ultimate strengthes of gable typed rigid frames were examined against the symmetrically distributed vertical loads using the elastic-plastic buckling analysis method. As the result of parametric study about various gable typed frames, we obtained the criterion of necessary slenderness ratio of frames to prevent the elastic-plastic asymmetrical buckling preceding the mechanism by simple plastic theory.

The signals (cybernetic signals) which operate control mechanisms have far more potential than signals which are rigidly linked to particular responses, however conditioned. They are generated internally by comparing some input with a standard. Systems so regulated are limited only by their capacity to handle information, generate standards, and resolve conflict. Psychology has been slow to credit men individually with such powers at the level at which societies manifestly exercise them. Cybernetic ways of thinking may be expected to contribute to the theory of human motivation by fostering this approach and quickening, among others, the insights that (a) regularities within social systems are created, not merely recognized, by the mutual expectations and self-expectations which they engender; (b) these expectations create and are in turn maintained by common standards of reality, by which common contexts and situations are distinguished, and common standards of obligation by which responses are judged, evoked, and inhibited; (c) the discrimination and regulation of relationships by such standards—which is a more comprehensive motivation than goal seeking—involves the management of conflicts at several levels, which this paper briefly distinguishes; (d) match signals are significant as a source of satisfaction and assurance not explained by other theories of motivation.
