In late 2023, the Amazon River Basin experienced its most extreme drought, putting its population and ecosystem at major risks. Gauges that were still functioning measured the lowest river water levels (RWL) on record. Here, satellite observations, including Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT), reveal the spread and timing of extremely low RWL across the entire river system. Nadir altimeter observations show that the 2023 minimum RWL in Central Amazon were more than 3 m below their annual average, representing two to three times its mean variability. Additionally, SWOT enables the first basin-scale characterization of the reduction in RWL with a spatial resolution of 200 m and how it propagates with time. Large-scale evaluation with gauges suggest that SWOT outperforms classical altimetry in estimating RWL, even if observed biases need further investigations. SWOT offers a new opportunity to understand hydroclimatic extremes and their broad impacts on the environment of the Amazon.

A large number of tumor types arise from the mucosa of the sinonasal cavities. Although presenting clinically distinct behavior, due to poorly differentiated histologic features, they can be difficult to classify correctly. Our aim was to investigate whether IDH2 and IDH1 mutations may be specific to a subset of undifferentiated and poorly differentiated sinonasal carcinomas. A total of 125 tumor samples of 7 different histologic subtypes were analyzed for IDH mutations by sequencing and mutant-specific immunohistochemistry, and the results were correlated to clinical and follow-up data. The highest incidence of IDH2 mutations occurred in sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, with 11/36 (31%) cases affected. However, also, 1/9 neuroendocrine carcinomas, 2/4 high-grade non-intestinal-type adenocarcinomas, and 1/8 poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas carried the IDH2 mutation, whereas 1/48 intestinal-type adenocarcinomas harbored an IDH1 mutation. Immunohistochemical analysis of mutant IDH1/2 produced a number of false-negative results, but also 1 false-positive tumor was found. Disease-specific survival was more favorable in IDH2-mutant versus wild-type cases. Our data suggest that IDH-mutant sinonasal cancers, independent of their histologic subtype, may represent a distinct tumor entity with less aggressive clinical behavior. Clinically, patients with these mutations may benefit from specific IDH-guided therapies.

This study analyzes the relationships between cognitive appraisals, classroom and test emotions, and math achievement in a sample of 1219 Portuguese students from the 6th and 8th grades. Participants completed measures of perceived value, perceived competence, and seven math achievement emotions (boredom, hopelessness, anger, anxiety, enjoyment, pride, and relief) experienced in two different settings: classroom and tests. Math achievement was obtained from school records. Results showed significant associations between student competence and value appraisals, their emotional experiences in test and classroom situations, and their math achievement. However, when emotions were considered simultaneously in structural equation modeling, only anger in test situations and hopelessness were significant negative predictors of students’ math achievement. Hopelessness appears to play a particular role in the interplay between cognitive appraisals, emotions, and academic achievement as it is the only emotion that relates to math achievement both in test and classroom situations. Furthermore, findings also support the existence of differences in the relationships between cognitive appraisals and the achievement emotions students experience in these two settings.

Loftus (Memory & Cognition 6:312-319, 1978) distinguished between interpretable and uninterpretable interactions. Uninterpretable interactions are ambiguous, because they may be due to two additive main effects (no interaction) and a nonlinear relationship between the (latent) outcome variable and its indicator. Interpretable interactions can only be due to the presence of a true interactive effect in the outcome variable, regardless of the relationship that it establishes with its indicator. In the present article, we first show that same problem can arise when an unmeasured mediator has a nonlinear effect on the measured outcome variable. Then we integrate Loftus's arguments with a seemingly contradictory approach to interactions suggested by Rosnow and Rosenthal (Psychological Bulletin 105:143-146, 1989). We show that entire data patterns, not just interaction effects alone, produce interpretable or noninterpretable interactions. Next, we show that the same problem of interpretability can apply to main effects. Lastly, we give concrete advice on what researchers can do to generate data patterns that provide unambiguous evidence for hypothesized interactions.
