International court affirms that Indigenous Peoples have rights to their lands and resources

From Nicaragua to the Kalahari Desert to the Arctic, Indigenous Peoples are fighting for the rights to their lands, their knowledge, and their very existence. They are doing so in law courts and international fora. Successes include the recent Awas Tingni decision and the persistence of the Inuit within the international debates on POPs. These set new expectations for Indigenous communities, but one author warns that countries must increase their financial support if increased participation of Indigenous Peoples in, for example, the Convention on Biological Diversity process and its expanding collaborative global efforts is to become a reality.
