Effect of the nature of acrylic copolymers on the properties of latex composites for impregnation of textile materials
The effect of the monomer composition of acrylic latex copolymers on the physicomechanical properties and water resistance of films was investigated. Sorption of latex polymers by different fibres was studied. Latexes with the maximum sorption for Capron were selected. It was found that latexes synthesized with a low emulsifier content by methods of radiation and seed emulsion polymerization from films with high strength and water resistance. The promise of using latexes of this type for fabricating textiles of higher quality was demonstrated.
Read moreInfluence of lomefloxacin on the morphology and ultrastructure of Gram-negative bacterial cells
We have studied the effect of lomefloxacin hydrochloride (Maxaquin. Searle, USA) on morphological and ultrastructural changes in the cells of Gram-negative bacteria:Ps. aeruginosa 165,S. typhi 4446,Kl. pneumoniae 444,E. coli KL-16 and KL-166 (laboratory strains), andPs. aeruginosa 5044 (clinical strain). Subbactericidal concentrations of Maxaquin are shown to induce cellular elongation in all the species of bacteria; differences in morphological changes for different microorganism are demonstrated. The elongation ofE. coli andPs. aeruginosa cells mainly occurs via filamentation of the bacterial cell with a sharp disruption of processes of division. In experiments withKl. pneumoniae andS. typhi, filamentous forms tend to be formed to a lesser degree although the elongation effect was sharply pronounced. The formation of scalloped cells and “ghosts” was typical forKl. pneumoniae, with deep ultrastructural changes in the cells recorded under the effect of lomefloxacin (Maxaquin).
Read moreFunctional results of microsurgical reconstruction of plantar defects.
Of 57 patients who underwent microvascular free flap reconstruction of the plantar surface, 21 developed recurrent trophic ulcerations. Clinical and roentgenographic examination demonstrated that the recurrences were primarily traumatic in origin, resulting either from exogenous factors such as footwear or from endogenous factors such as osteophytes. A new method of surgically reconstructing the plantar aponeurosis was found to be effective in reducing the rate of recurrence.
Read moreThe diagnostic significance of serum ferritin indices in patients with malignant and reactive histiocytosis.
Iron metabolism was studied in 10 patients with malignant histiocytosis (MH), in 16 patients with histiocytosis-X (Langerhans cell histiocytosis) and in 34 patients with reactive proliferation of the mononuclear phagocytes (MPS). Eight MH patients had a considerably increased level of serum ferritin (SF). The average level of SF was 6070 +/- 957 mg/l for MH patients, which is significantly greater than the SF level for HX and RH patients. The study of the serum ferritin profiles suggests that the main pathogenetic mechanism of hyperferritinaemia in MH is the synthesis and secretion of ferritin by neoplastic mononuclear phagocytes. From this, hyperferritinaemia in MH may be considered as pathognomic of this disease and used as an additional diagnostic criterion. In addition, SF is the most informative parameter for the clinical practice among the indices of the functional state of MPS.
Read moreThe Mechanisms of Polystyrene Destruction Under Influence of Powerful UV-Radiation: Initial Stages
Abstract Physical processes stipulating photoinitiation of polystyrene destruction under influence of powerful UV-radiation treatment are considered. The experimental results on its photolysis at UV-irradiation in different spectral ranges are given confirming the decisive role of triplet-triplet transfer of excitation energy from benzene rings to simple bonds, and triplet-triplet annihilation on the initial stages of photodestruction. Key Words: PolystyrenedegradationUV-radiation
Read moreThe Mechanism of Radiation Destruction of Dyes in Polymers: A New Method for Increasing the Stability of Dyed Polymers Based on Oscillative Cross-Relaxation
Abstract Discussion of the mechanism of radiation destruction of dyes in polymers, which is associated with solid-phase chemical reaction between dye molecules and oxyradicals appearing either on destruction of polymer molecules or on oxidation of macroradicals by the oxygen dissolved in the matrix. Experimental results are given on radiolysis and photolysis of polymethyl methacrylate with a “resonant” low molecular weight additive and dye (nickel dithiobenzil complex and vanadyl phthalocyanine), which demonstrate the decisive role of oscillative cross-relaxation between macromolecules and molecules of the additive in increasing the radiation stability of dyed polymers.

An HTS quantum interferometer
Results of measurements of the parameters of a superconducting quantum interferometer made of a yttrium-based HTS ceramic prepared by solid-phase technique modified by a special homogenizing treatment of the initial components are presented. These measurements show that the field resolution of such an interferometer at 77 K is 2·10−13 T/Hz0.5.
