Dietary supplementation with <scp>ALLPRO</scp> , a <scp>DHA</scp> source, for Nile tilapia reared under field conditions throughout cold season: Effects on growth performance, carcass and fillet quality, and economic feasibility
Abstract This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with ALLPRO, a source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA—C22:6n‐3, 126 g kg −1 dry weight) and nucleotides (5 g kg −1 dry weight), on Nile tilapia farmed in southern Brazil during autumn, winter, and spring. Two isoenergetic diets were tested: one supplemented with 1.7 g ALLPRO 100 g −1 of diet (dry weight), based on prior studies performed under lab conditions, and a control diet without n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Juvenile tilapia (16.09 ± 0.13 g) were stocked at 45 fish m −3 in 12 net cages (1.6 m 3 ) placed in a pond. A completely randomized design with six replicates per treatment was used. Feeding rate and frequency were adjusted based on fish biomass and water temperature using Epagri/SC feeding tables. The trial lasted 245 days, and the parameters evaluated included growth performance, yield (fillet and carcass), proximate composition, fillet fatty acid profile, and economic feasibility. Fish fed the ALLPRO diet showed improved feed conversion, highest daily weight gain, increased protein utilization, greater yield, and elevated crude protein and n‐3 PUFA levels, especially DHA, in fillets. Supplementation with 0.22 g of DHA 100 g −1 of diet dry weight resulted in a 10% higher final weight compared to fish fed the control diet without DHA supplementation. Although the inclusion of the additive increased the diet cost, the average production cost per whole fish and fillet was more economically efficient. In conclusion, ALLPRO supplementation enhanced growth, nutritional quality, and economic feasibility in Nile tilapia farming under suboptimal temperatures in field conditions.

Acanthamoeba spp. are free-living protozoa associatedwith severe infections such as amebic keratitis and granulomatousamebic encephalitis. The absence of effective treatments highlightsthe need for new bioactive molecules targeting both trophozoite andcyst forms. This study evaluated the anti-Acanthamoeba activity of adamantane-azole gold(I) complexes (C1 and C4) and theirinteraction with thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Complexes C2, C3, andC4 exhibited potent amoebicidal activity with IC50 valuesof 0.12, 14, and 6.2 μM, respectively. They disrupted the cellcycle and induced phosphatidylserine exposure, while C4 also triggeredmitochondrial depolarization. Ultrastructural alterations, synergywith chlorhexidine, and absence of toxicity in vitro and in vivo modelswere observed. Molecular docking confirmed TrxR as a potential target. These findings demonstrate the therapeutic promise of C2, C3, andC4 gold(I) complexes against Acanthamoeba spp. infections, combining potent activity with minimal toxicity and supporting furtherinvestigation of their mechanisms of action.

In official judo competitions, athletes often participate in multiple bouts with short recovery intervals, leading to progressive fatigue that impacts neuromuscular performance. This study examined the acute effects of four simulated judo bouts on bilateral strength deficit (BLD) using metrics from countermovement jumps (CMJs). Thirteen male national-level judo athletes (21.4 ± 2.9 years) participated in the study. Athletes performed both unilateral and bilateral CMJs in randomized order: first at baseline before the initial match, and then after each of the four subsequent matches. The CMJ metrics evaluated included peak and mean power, jump height, peak force, peak velocity, and vertical net impulse. The study used the typical error (TE) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to assess relative and absolute reliability. To compare CMJ metrics across the matches, the Friedman test with Conover's post hoc analysis was conducted, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The main findings showed excellent relative reliability, with an ICC greater than 0.85 for all variables in both limbs. Significant effects of the judo matches were observed only in the CMJ impulse (which decreased after the third match) and in BLD of impulse, which increased after the third match (p < 0.05). No statistically significant changes were found in other CMJ metrics. These results suggest that while successive judo bouts induced significant fatigue and force deficits, detectable through changes in impulse, other CMJ metrics remained unaffected. This may indicate that the capacity to generate force quickly in the lower limbs is primarily impacted by successive judo bouts.

ABSTRACT Aloe vera (AV) gel has emerged as a multifunctional ingredient for edible films and coatings amid global efforts to improve food security, reduce plastic waste, and limit postharvest losses. This review summarizes current knowledge on the extraction, composition, and application of Aloe vera gel in biopolymer‐based systems for food preservation. The literature indicates that AV gel contains polysaccharides, which are primarily responsible for film formation, as well as phenolic compounds and organic acids that provide antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The incorporation of biopolymers and inorganic nanoparticles into films containing AV gel can enhance their overall performance, as these materials reinforce the polymer matrix, increase mechanical strength, reduce water vapor permeability, and lower solubility. Nanoparticles act as structural reinforcing agents, while biopolymers such as starch, alginate, chitosan, and gelatin improve cohesion and stability, resulting in films with enhanced properties for food packaging applications. In postharvest applications, AV‐based coatings reduce weight loss, microbial and oxidative deterioration, and delay changes in color and texture in fruits, vegetables, and meat products, often extending shelf life without compromising sensory quality. Regulatory concerns mainly related to hydroxyanthracene derivatives, together with environmental and economic considerations, are also addressed. Overall, AV represents a promising natural ingredient for sustainable edible packaging. However, further progress relies on standardizing AV raw materials, conducting sensory and toxicological assessments, and validating formulations at pilot and industrial scales.

HOW TO DEAL WITH DECARBONIZATION – THE ORGANA BIOTECH CASE STUDY
The decarbonization of the global economy is an urgent imperative to mitigate the impacts of climate change driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Rocha; Silva, 2025). In this context, the inadequate management of organic solid waste—historically responsible for methane (CH4) emissions in landfills—remains a critical challenge for the industrial sector. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 establishes the need to halve global per capita food waste by 2030, reinforcing the urgency of implementing Circular Economy (CE) practices and waste elimination strategies. This article analyzes the strategic relevance of Organa Biotech, a biotechnology startup based in Joinville (SC), as a pioneering industrial decarbonization case study. Organa Biotech applies an in-company accelerated composting methodology (Takakura Method) combined with data intelligence (gravimetry) to locally transform organic waste into high-quality compost. This approach not only drives waste elimination but also mitigates 1,852 kg of CO2 equivalent per ton of waste diverted from landfills, qualifying as a Clean Development Mechanism. The Organa Biotech model demonstrates an effective and replicable solution for meeting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria (Li et al., 2021) and advancing the productive sector toward carbon neutrality, delivering both economic and environmental value. This work was supported by the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e Inovação do Estado de Santa Catarina (FAPESC), through Public Call Nº 50/2024 – Programa Impulsiona (SC).
