Quantifying animal movements is necessary for answering a wide array of research questions in ecology and conservation biology. Consequently, ecologists have made considerable efforts to identify the best way to estimate an animal's home range, and many methods of estimating home ranges have arisen over the past half a century. Most of these methods fall into two distinct categories of estimators that have only recently been described in statistical detail: those that measure range distributions (methods such as kernel density estimation that quantify the long-run behavior of a movement process that features restricted space use) and those that measure occurrence distributions (methods such as Brownian bridge movement models and the Correlated Random Walk Library that quantify uncertainty in an animal movement path during a specific period of observation). In this paper, we use theory, simulations, and empirical analysis to demonstrate the importance of appropriately using these two categories of distributions and their estimators. Conflating range and occurrence distributions can have serious consequences for ecological inference and conservation practice. For example, in most situations, home ranges estimated using estimators of occurrence distributions are too small, and this problem is exacerbated by ongoing improvements in tracking technology that enable more frequent and more accurate data on animal movements. We encourage researchers to use estimators of range distributions to quantify home ranges and estimators of occurrence distributions to answer other questions in movement ecology, such as when and where an animal crossed a linear feature, visited a location of interest, or interacted with other animals.

ABSTRACT Indigenous lands in the Brazilian Amazon are critical to ecosystem conservation and cultural preservation but face increasing wildfire risks exacerbated by climate change and environmental degradation. This study explores how participatory mapping supports local resilience against wildfire risks, drawing on experiences from three villages in the Capoto/Jarina Indigenous land in Brazil. In each village, participatory maps were produced, and participants identified important locations for fire management, marking areas based on fire use, wildfire risks or the presence of fire‐vulnerable resources. The results provide local insight into vegetation changes affecting wildfire and demonstrate how the interaction between vegetation and traditional fire use, including some small fires that are not detected by satellite, shapes wildfire risk. Results revealed the role of invasive plant species, such as Brachiaria spp., in shaping local wildfire risks. Participatory mapping helped pinpoint critical resources and vegetation types that are fire‐sensitive and essential to local livelihoods. Finally, participatory mapping provided a spatially explicit representation of fire use, some of which were specific to environmental benefits, and wildfire risk management strategies across communities. The findings demonstrate that participatory mapping can help strengthen the resilience of local communities to wildfire risks by eliciting local fire use and wildfire management preferences while facilitating the creation of new local fire knowledge. The maps can be integrated into a broader wildfire risk assessment process, bringing together different knowledge systems to enrich stakeholders' understanding of shifting wildfire risks and planning for targeted interventions. As Brazil embraces the benefits of Indigenous and traditional fire use, participatory mapping can serve as a valuable tool for strengthening community‐driven resilience strategies such as local fire brigade initiatives. Its accessibility and adaptability make it particularly effective for engaging diverse stakeholders, enabling greater participation and supporting the continuous adaptation of fire management practices in response to evolving environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT This study presents a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the genus Meripilus and its allied genera Henningsia and Physisporinus within the Meripilaceae family, in the broader context of the residual polyporoid clade. The three genera are morphologically similar and characterized by resupinate to pileate basidiomes that harden and often darken upon drying, a monomitic hyphal structure, simple-septate generative hyphae, and globose to ovoid basidiospores, with variable presence of cystidia. Species in Henningsia and Meripilus, in turn, present gloeopleurous hyphae in the context and large, multipileate basidiomes. Recent studies have indicated that Physisporinus, as currently defined, is not monophyletic, with Meripilus nested within it. Phylogenetic analysis based on four molecular markers confirmed the paraphyletic nature of Physisporinus, with Meripilus and Henningsia both nested within it. Morphological examinations of specimens collected in South America, along with revisions of type specimens, show that this segregation is not natural and causes nomenclatural problems. We propose to transfer all species currently placed in Physisporinus into Meripilus, thereby preventing the division of the genus into morphologically indistinguishable groups. As a result of this reclassification, we propose 35 new combinations in Meripilus and describe three new species from South America.

Abstract Fungi play a vital ecological role in Neotropical ecosystems, yet their diversity remains poorly documented, particularly in protected areas of Brazil. This study aimed to conduct the first comprehensive assessment of macrofungal diversity along four trails located in the Chapada Diamantina National Park and the Serra do Conduru State Park, both in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. From the 266 collected macrofungal specimens, 74 representative samples were selected at the order level for molecular identification by sequencing. Taxonomic identification revealed specimens within two phyla, eight orders, 30 families, and 42 genera, with Basidiomycota being predominant (72 taxa, 97%) and represented mainly by Agaricales (47 taxa, 65%), with Entoloma as the most common genus (10 taxa, 13.5%). Phylogenetic analyses confidently identified 17 species, each represented by a single specimen. Additionally, seven specimens were tentatively assigned as confer or affinis to known taxa, 48 specimens were identified only to the genus level, and two were classified at the family level. Notably, five species were recorded for the first time in the state of Bahia: Agaricus furfuripes, Cantharellus guyanensis, Cookeina speciosa, Mycena margarita and Neofavolus teixeirae, with A. furfuripes also representing the first record for Brazil. The findings highlight both the high diversity and the taxonomic knowledge gaps in these ecosystems, reinforcing the need for further morphological and molecular studies to validate potentially novel taxa. This study establishes a taxonomic inventory as an important baseline for the region and highlights the role of responsible tourism and environmental education in conserving macrofungal diversity in Neotropical protected areas.
