While chatbots are increasingly used for customer service, there is a knowledge gap concerning the impact of Conversational Breakdown in such chatbot interactions. In a 2 \({\times}\) 4 factorial design online experiment, we studied how Conversational Breakdown impacts user emotion and trust in a chatbot for customer service, given variations in task criticality and breakdown task order. Here, 257 participants were randomly assigned to complete high- or low-criticality tasks with a prototype chatbot for customer service, experiencing Conversational Breakdown for the first, second, third or none of their tasks. The task set was decided from a 63-participant pre-study. We found significant impact of Conversational Breakdown, including a marked order effect on overall trust, as well as a bounce-back effect on task-specific trust and emotion after subsequent successful task completion. We found no post-interaction effect of Task Criticality. Based on our findings, we discuss theoretical and practical implications and suggest future research.

Activated carbon has long been recognized as a promising electrode material for energy storage devices. The extraordinarily high specific area makes it challenging to replace in supercapacitors since electrical double-layer capacitors need such surfaces but also porous networks to enable electrolyte penetration. As a raw material for synthesizing activated carbon, sawdust offers key benefits, such as its renewability, abundance, favorable physical attributes for energy storage, and a more environmentally friendly synthesis process compared to mined alternative sources. In this work, electrochemical characterization is carried out which highlights the critical role of pelletization in enhancing the capacitive performance of sawdust-derived activated carbon, in addition to the implicit handling and logistical benefits. Subsequently, a Li-ion capacitor is assembled with an organic solvent-based electrolyte, sawdust-derived activated carbon serving as the positive electrode, and an Al-based foil negative electrode, potentially combining high energy and power density materials into a hybrid device. Despite commendable electrochemical performance and the use of a sustainable waste-derived positive electrode with a commoditized negative electrode, challenges remain regarding the ability to mitigate the role of surface functional groups that are stabilized by bio-carbon thermal treatments. Nevertheless, this distinctive architecture holds promise as an alternative high-power energy storage technology for a future filled with renewable energy, electric vehicles, and portable electronic devices.

Li-ion capacitors (LICs) are designed to achieve high power and energy densities using a carbon-based material as a positive electrode coupled with a negative electrode often adopted from Li-ion batteries. However, such adoption cannot be direct and requires additional materials optimization. Furthermore, for the desired device’s performance, a proper design of the electrodes is necessary to balance the different charge storage mechanisms. The negative electrode with an intercalation or alloying active material must provide the high rate performance and long-term cycling ability necessary for LIC functionality—a primary challenge for the design of these energy-storage devices. In addition, the search for new active materials must also consider the need for environmentally friendly chemistry and the sustainable availability of key elements. With these factors in mind, this review evaluates advanced and emerging materials used as high-rate anodes in LICs from the perspective of their practical implementation.
