Research objectives and problem: The aim of this article is to analyze determinants related to family and school that foster exceeding one’s own limitations (transgression) in the narratives of “barrier-free” individuals. The research question is formulated as follows: Which factors that contribute to readiness for transgressive action and are associated with the family and educational environment emerge in autobiographical reconstructions? The analysis identifies conditions that are conducive to transgression. Reflection on these factors may support the educational process and, through biography-based learning, be used in formative practice. Research methods: Empirically, the article draws on the authors’ qualitative study of people with disabilities who were finalists or laureates of the nationwide competition called “Person Without Barriers.” The study was conducted within the interpretive paradigm using the biographical method and procedures of grounded theory. Process of argumentation: Amid multiple contemporary crises, young people increasingly face isolation, loss of trust, diminished sense of meaning, and difficulties in setting life goals. The incidence of mood disorders, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior among children and adolescents is rising. This results in the need for effective forms of educational support. One possible form of action is education grounded in the life stories of “barrier-free” individuals. Theoretically, the article refers to psychotransgressionism and the notion of homo transgressivus, which were developed by the Polish psychologist Józef Kozielecki. Research findings and their impact on the development of educational sciences: The analysis indicates that family and school conditions are crucial for the development of transgressive action. The identified family factors were acceptance, granting age-appropriate autonomy and decision-making, cultivating a belief in one’s capabilities rather than focusing on deficits, fostering resourcefulness, and building optimism. School-related factors included treating the student as a subject/agent, setting demanding expectations, and simultaneously adopting individualized and flexible responses to the student’s needs and abilities. Conclusions and recommendations: The narratives of “barrier-free” individuals show that the identified features of the family and school environment support transgression. This knowledge should be disseminated among parents and teachers/educators, as a particular approach to upbringing can create opportunities for young people to move beyond various constraints and to formulate and attain ambitious life goals.

The aim of this study is to show how sacred music supports education towards and for peace. The theoretical framework for reflection includes the concepts of cognitive, social, and emotional learning as proposed by Knud Illeris (2006), as well as religious pedagogy in the approach of Zbigniew Marek (2022). The adoption of these concepts in reflecting on education towards and for peace through sacred music is justified, as they refer to the same dimensions of learning and development that are influenced by music. The search for connections between peace, education, and sacred music is conducted from a Christian perspective, which requires reference to the biblical understanding of the term peace – specifically the Hebrew shalom and the Greek eirēnē.

In The Book of the Knight of the Tower, the father-narrator teaches his daughters how to recognize cleverly disguised deceivers who speak both truly and falsely. In the course of the Knight’s conduct manual for girls, it becomes clear that the words are divided into good and evil, depending on the speaker’s intention, while the responsibility for discerning a true word from a false one lies with the respondent, most frequently a young lady. In my paper I will examine the writer’s engagement with female speech against a socio-historical context, on the one hand, and against St. Thomas Aquinas’s typology of sins presented in Summa Theologica, on the other. My aim is to show that the moral lessons imparted from parent to child, especially lessons on the use of speech, should be understood in terms of practical ethics in that they move beyond a concern for the individual’s moral conscience and have wider implications for the family’s good name within the community and indeed for society in general.

This paper introduces a new format of academic debating called the “Cracovian debate,” designed with a single goal: the cognitive gain of all participants. Its cooperative nature supports this aim and distinguishes it from competitive debate formats. The Cracovian debate is based on the dialectical principle of charity, understood as a procedural framework for critical discussion. We begin by identifying the need for such a format, showing how the competitive structure of existing academic debates can hinder one of their key purposes—learning through the exchange of differing views. We then critique the metaphor of war that underlies adversarial debate and propose an alternative metaphor that encourages cooperation instead. Following this, we outline the Cracovian debate’s structure, goals, and flow, all derived from the dialectical principle of charity. We argue that this format complements competitive debating by fostering essential intellectual skills, including: (1) openness to new information and disconfirming feedback; (2) the ability to reconstruct opposing arguments in ways acceptable to their proponents; (3) careful argument analysis; (4) collaboration with people holding different viewpoints; and (5) depolarisation—viewing interlocutors as partners rather than opponents. The format has been tested in pilot research conducted between 2021 and 2024, which yielded valuable insights into debate dynamics and supported the initial hypotheses. The model now offers a foundation for further studies, such as corpus analysis, to evaluate its effectiveness in promoting argument quality, depolarisation, and cognitive outcomes. Appendix 1 presents the research results; Appendix 2 includes a facilitator’s manual for classroom use; and Appendix 3 provides a full transcript of a sample Cracovian debate.

In the face of modern civilisation and globalisation, one key educational challenge is to foster reflexivity and critical thinking from an early age. While adolescents are expected to reflect on educational and social issues, children aged 7–10 are rarely supported in developing this competence. Ignatian pedagogy — based on context, experience, action, reflection, and evaluation — emphasises introducing children to reflection in a developmentally appropriate way. This article presents practical methods inspired by the Ignatian model to foster reflection in four areas: conceptual, metacognitive, socio-emotional, and spiritual. Drawing on literature analysis, observation, and educational innovation, the paper shows how early childhood educators can implement reflective activities in daily practice. The teacher’s role is crucial, as they model reflective attitudes. Despite the belief that children are not ready for reflection, the article demonstrates that well-designed pedagogical strategies can support the development of reflective habits.

Over the past few years, the word “narrative” has appeared several times on the covers of “Horizons of Education”. Each time, we closed the issue with a sense of dissatisfac- tion and the conviction that the considerations that we had undertaken, certainly, had not run out the topics that interested us. Therefore, handing in this issue to you, we return with great joy once again to the reflection on narrative.

Jednocześnie interpretacja teorii i praktyki Konopnickiego pozwala dostrzec lukę badawczą przejawiającą się w niedowartościowaniu duchowego wymiaru osoby w badaniach pedagogicznych podejmowanych z perspektywy resocjalizacji.
