Active Shimming Magnet for Dipole Accelerator to Compensate Sextupole Harmonic Field
An active shimming magnet was developed to compensate sextupole error fields in a block-type REBCO dipole magnet. The magnet employs a sextupole configuration with three no-insulation double-pancake coils wound from 2 mm-wide REBCO tapes. Standalone tests at 77 K confirmed intact electromagnetic performance after winding and assembly. Field quality measurements at 4.2 K under dipole fields of 1.0 T and 3.1 T showed a linear decrease of sextupole component <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$b_{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> with increasing shimming current up to 30 A, with consistent compensation ability at both fields. The active shimming magnet caused an increase in <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$b_{5}$</tex-math></inline-formula> and a decrease in <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$b_{7}$</tex-math></inline-formula>, both with magnitudes much smaller than that of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$b_{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula>, indicating limited impact on overall field quality. These results demonstrate that the active shimming magnet effectively reduces sextupole field errors to within 1 unit, providing a compensation approach for improving field quality in future HTS accelerator dipole magnets.
