Celebrating Ten Years of Excellent Electrochemistry
Perfect Ten: Happy birthday, ChemElectroChem! In this Editorial, we look back at the accomplishments of the journal, reflect on recent changes, and look forward to celebrating our 10-year anniversary with you! Ten years ago, ChemElectroChem published its first issue and what a great ride it has been! Under the leadership of Greta Heydenrych and then Kate Lawrence, the journal has really taken off and has become a trusted forum for the electrochemistry community worldwide. As of November 1, 2023, I have taken on the role of Editor-in-Chief and I am ready to embark on this new era—an Open Access era—and continue to develop the journal and get close to our community. I remember finding out about a new electrochemistry journal being launched when I was still a postdoc and little did I know I would join Wiley a few years later and would be writing this Editorial now. I already worked for ChemElectroChem as Associate Editor from 2018 to 2021 and I am really excited to be back and very thankful to my predecessors for everything I have learned from them and for the amazing work they have done in developing the journal. In this Editorial, I want to look back and celebrate our achievements over the past decade and set the tone for what's ahead. ChemElectroChem opened its doors for submissions in 2013 and its inaugural issue in 2014 was also its first Special Issue, including contributions from many members of the original Editorial Advisory Board (EAB). This issue already displayed the wide variety of topics covered by the journal, including electrocatalysis, energy storage, sensors, photoelectrochemistry, nanoscience, and more! Later in 2019, a 5-Year Anniversary Special Issue withcontributions from the EAB celebrated the next milestone of the journal (Figure 1). Front Covers of ChemElectroChem’s inaugural and 5-Year Anniversary issues. Since then, the journal has undergone many changes: it received a “new look” (Figure 2) when the former ChemPubSoc Europe was rebranded as Chemistry Europe, traded Special Issues for Special Collections (“virtual Special Issues”), started using eLocators instead of page numbers, launched its inaugural Early Career Editorial Board (ECAB) (Figure 3), introduced Data Reporting Checklists, and most recently, became the first journal from Chemisrty Europe to “flip” to a fully Open Access (OA) publishing model (more on that later). All these changes are testimony to how the journal quickly adapts to the needs of the scientific community and tries to foster diversity and inclusion. I am happy to announce that as of January of 2024, Michelle Browne and Encarnación Torralba will be promoted from the ECAB to our EAB. They recently guest-edited a Special Collection highlighting the work of Early Career Women in Electrochemistry. We started by publishing 12 issues per year, but considering the rapid growth of this field in the past three decades, by the time this Editorial is published, ChemElectroChem will have published 192 issues! These 192 issues cover almost 4200 manuscripts, including Research Papers (formerly Full Papers or Communications), Review-type articles, Concepts, Highlights, and Perspectives. Moreover, we have planned and executed 40 Special Issues and Collections with the support of more than 120 invited Guest Editors (many of which serve our EAB and ECAB), who have helped us identify current topics of interest for the community and top authors to invite to publish their work with the journal. These efforts combined with the work of our in-house editors, who are responsible for our rigorous peer review practices and publication workflows, ensure that we continue to publish excellent electrochemistry content. When you visit our homepage, you will find our most recent Special Collections, including: Topical Collections that cover the latest trends in electrochemistry. Celebratory Collections that highlight members of the electrochemistry community, honoring milestones and promoting diversity. Research Consortia and Institute Features, which highlight our recent collections dedicated to Latin American electrochemists and Electrochemistry in Africa. In 2022, ChemElectroChem achieved a new record number of downloads. Check out the 10 most accessed publications of the last 12 months (Table 1). Corresponding Author(s) Title Type DOI Alexander J. E. With the evolving nature of the publishing landscape, which is undeniably shifting to an OA world, our journals are also evolving. Publishing with OA means that your article is readily available to read, without a paywall, increasing its visibility and making it easier for readers to find your work and cite it. You can read more about the motivation behind this change and what it implies for our authors and readers in Kate's Editorial from 2022. Naturally, it has taken time for our authors to adapt to this change, but I can say with confidence that this was the right path forward for the journal as we can reach a wider audience and ensure that are authors comply with many funding bodies and research councils that mandate OA publishing. Moreover, we are happy to report that since the end of May 2023, ChemElectroChem has been indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), which is considered the gold standard for OA. None of the achievements described so far would have been possible without the support of the community: our authors, reviewers, and readers, as well as our EAB and ECAB members, especially the EAB Chairs: Bing-Wei Mao, Wolfgang Schuhmann, and Flavio Maran. To all of you: Thank you! In 2024, we would like to celebrate by doing what we love to do: publishing the best electrochemistry out there. We will be launching a 10-Year Anniversary Special Collection that will not only include our board members, but also our top authors, reviewers, and past Guest Editors. Visit our website often for updates! We will also increase our efforts in outreach and expect to visit some of the key electrochemistry conferences throughout the year. Keep an eye on our social media channel (@ChemElectroChem) to find out where and when you can meet us! On the occasion of our 10-year anniversary, we have asked our Board Chairs to share some thoughts about ChemElectroChem: Bing-Wei Mao: ChemElectroChem has traversed its ten-year developmental history, bearing witness to the rapid progress of electrochemistry in areas such as energy storage, conversion, and renewable energy. Looking ahead, new breakthroughs facilitated by cross-disciplinary research in materials science, engineering, analytical science, and data science will support the development of sustainable and efficient energy technologies. The growing trend of artificial intelligence in electrochemistry is also expected to promote more efficient and precise research methods and technologies, contributing to comprehensive solutions for understanding and optimizing electrochemical processes. Undoubtedly, ChemElectroChem will continue to thrive, embracing the new advancements in electrochemistry in the years to come. Wolfgang Schuhmann 10 years of ChemElectroChem coincided with the increase of importance of electrochemistry in general, but specifically electrocatalysis for energy conversion and storage as well as the developments in battery technology. It was timely and important to have a high-quality place to publish the fascinating results obtained during this time. As always, we are open to any input from all members of the electrochemistry community. Please get in touch with us with any feedback, critique, or ideas. We look forward to hearing from you and on behalf of the entire ChemElectroChem Editorial Team, we wish you all the best for 2024! – Rosalba – Dr. Rosalba A. Rincón Editor-in-Chief ChemElectroChem
