This study explored problematic social media use (PSMU) among a sample of 1,338 Turkish adults (67.1% female, 32.9% male) aged 17–68 years (M = 24.18, SD = 8.15), representing 65 provinces in Türkiye. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted based on item-level responses to the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to examine associations between profile membership and psychological distress (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales–21; DASS-21), fear of missing out (FoMO), and self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale; RSE). A latent profile analysis identified four distinct profiles of PSMU: Minimal Users (32.81%), Habitual Users (22.65%), Engaged Users (28.33%), and Heavy Addicts (16.22%). The 4-class model outperformed alternative solutions based on fit indices and classification accuracy (entropy = 0.73). Minimal Users exhibited infrequent social media use with no signs of addiction. Habitual Users integrated social media into their daily lives and reported negative experiences when attempting to reduce usage. Engaged Users displayed high social media engagement with controlled addictive tendencies, while Heavy Addicts demonstrated severe addiction with substantial life disruptions. Logistic regression analyses indicated that age was associated with a higher likelihood of membership in the Minimal User profile, whereas higher levels of depression, stress, and FoMO were associated with membership in more problematic profiles. Higher self-esteem was associated with a greater likelihood of belonging to the Minimal User profile compared to more engaged profiles. These findings underscore the heterogeneity of PSMU and highlight the psychological and demographic variables associated with profile membership. The study’s findings suggest that young adults with high levels of psychological distress, fear of missing out, and low self-esteem could be a priority group in future preventive and intervention efforts targeting problematic social media use.
Read moreEffects of gold nanoparticles and oligonucleotide coated gold nanoparticles on oxidative stress parameters in rats
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used in biomedical applications. Due to data gap for safety of them, this research aimed to evaluate both AuNPs and oligonucleotide coated AuNPs (O-AuNPs) at 100, 500, and 2500 µg/kg doses in rats. Oxidative stress parameters, cytokines, 3-Nitrotyrosine, and metallothionein levels were also measured. There were significant changes in catalase, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde in erythrocyte, liver, kidney and brain tissues of rats. Liver metallothionein decreased in the lowest dose AuNPs, lowest and mid-dose O-AuNPs. As a result, AuNPs seem to have some adverse effects on oxidative stress parameters. Further researches are needed to elucidate the safety of AuNPs and O-AuNPs.

Abstract Background The present study aimed to determine whether any distinction can be acquired between the benign and malignant lesions of the liver by calculating the difference between the resistive index (RI) values obtained from the branch of the hepatic artery in focal liver lesions (FLLs), the branch of the hepatic artery in the parenchyma adjacent to the lesion and proper hepatic artery. Methods A total of 96 patients (55 female and 41 male) were admitted to the ultrasonography unit of the radiology department. The values of diagnostic mass/parenchymal RI difference rates were determined to differentiate the benign and malignant lesions one another by performing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in 68 patients whose RI values obtained from the branch of the hepatic artery in the mass were lower than the RI values obtained from the branch of the hepatic artery adjacent to the lesion. Results In the ROC curve analysis, the cut-off value was calculated as 11.3 in the differentiation of benign liver lesions from malignant liver lesions. The levels of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were calculated as 68.8, 58.3, 59.5, and 67.7%, respectively. Conclusion In this prospective study, the RI values were obtained from proper hepatic artery, the intra parenchymal branch of the hepatic artery, and the branch of the hepatic artery in the mass in different liver lesions, and whether there was a significant relationship between those RI values was investigated.
Read moreDevelopment of the Esports Orientation Tendency Scale (ESOTS)
The rapid growth of esports has led to increasing participation among middle and late adolescents, raising the need for theoretically grounded and psychometrically sound instruments to assess adolescents’ orientation toward esports. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate the Esports Orientation Tendency Scale (ESOTS), a multidimensional instrument designed to assess adolescents’ orientation toward esports as a technology-mediated leisure tendency. Following established scale development guidelines, an eight-step procedure was employed, including theoretical framework development, item pool generation, expert review, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability assessment, and the evaluation of criterion-related and nomological validity. Data were collected from three independent adolescent samples (N = 829): Sample 1 (n = 300) was used for EFA, Sample 2 (n = 400) for CFA, and Sample 3 (n = 129) for nomological validity testing and supplementary structural (path) modeling and analyzed using EFA, CFA, and structural modeling techniques. The final version of the ESOTS consists of 55 items across six dimensions: Digital Gaming Passion, Leisure Time Utilization, Ease of Access to Esports, Financial Gain, Absence of Demographic Barriers, and Popularity. Results supported the six-factor structure and demonstrated satisfactory model fit, strong internal consistency, and adequate convergent and discriminant validity. Nomological validity analyses indicated that esports orientation is strongly associated with technology acceptance constructs and gaming disorder symptoms, while remaining unrelated to general psychological well-being and academic performance. Overall, the findings indicate that the ESOTS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing adolescents’ orientation toward esports. The scale provides a nuanced framework for examining esports engagement as a multidimensional orientation and may be useful for research and applied settings aiming to better understand patterns of esports participation and potential risk-related outcomes under specific conditions.
