Herein, we report selectively designed, synthesized and characterized bent-core molecules bearing methyl and chloro substituents at the lateral positions on the phenyl rings of the azobenzene wings for optical storage device applications.

Ambient light sensors have been used to reduce power consumption of Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays (AMLCD) adjusting display brightness depending on ambient illumination. Discrete sensors have been commonly used for this purpose. They make module design complex. Therefore it has been required to integrate the sensors on the display panels for solving the issue. So far, many kinds of integrated sensors have been developed using Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) technology or Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) technology. These conventional integrated sensors have two problems. One is that LTPS sensors have less dynamic range due to the less photosensitivity of LTPS photodiodes. The other is that both the LTPS and a-Si sensors are susceptible to display driving noises. In this paper, we introduce a novel integrated sensor using both LTPS and a-Si technologies, which can solve these problems. It consists of vertical a-Si Schottky photodiodes and an LTPS differential converter circuit. The a-Si photodiodes have much higher photosensitivity than LTPS ones, and this contributes to wide dynamic range and high accuracy. The LTPS differential converter circuit converts photocurrent of the photodiodes to a robust digital signal. In addition it has a function of canceling the influences of the display driving noises. With the circuit, the sensor can stably and accurately work even under the noises. The performance of the sensor introduced in this paper was measured to verify the advantages of the novel design. The measurement result showed that it worked in a wide ambient illuminance range of 5-55, 000lux with small errors of below 5%. It was also verified that it stably and accurately worked even under the display driving noise. Thus the sensor introduced in this paper achieved the wide dynamic range and noise robustness.

Abstract We report on highly flexible layered full color cholesteric displays built using ultra thin substrates with encapsulation through the phase separation approach. Recent progress of the state of the art of the cholesteric display technology will be presented as well.

Bistable reflective cholesteric displays are a liquid crystal display technology developed to fill a market need for very low power displays. Their unique look, high reflectivity, bistability, and simple structure make them an ideal flat panel display choice for handheld or other portable devices where small lightweight batteries with long lifetimes are important. Applications ranging from low resolution large signs to ultra high resolution electronic books can utilize cholesteric displays to not only benefit from the numerous features, but also create enabling features that other flat panel display technologies cannot. Flexible displays are the focus of attention of numerous research groups and corporations worldwide. Cholesteric displays have been demonstrated to be highly amenable to flexible substrates. This paper will review recent advances in flexible cholesteric displays including both phase separation and emulsification approaches to encapsulation. Both approaches provide unique benefits to various aspects of manufacturability, processes, flexibility, and conformability.

In this paper, we present recent results from encapsulation work in developing flexible and drapable cholesteric liquid crystal displays on substrates such as thin plastics, fabrics, and even paper. The approaches to create flexible displays with single and dual substrate methods based on printable emulsions and polymerization induced phase separation techniques will be discussed.

This paper highlights recent advances toward flexible cholesteric displays including new night vision applications for military use and full color. Particular emphasis is paid to recently developed encapsulated cholesteric liquid crystals that are necessary for printing and coating the materials as well as prevent erasure of the image during flexing or handling the display. The paper presents recent results from encapsulation of cholesteric materials using polymerization induced phase separation and their progression towards thin flexible plastic based cholesteric displays. Several other key issues in the transition from smooth rigid glass substrates to flexible plastic substrates including spacing control and preparation of surfaces are discussed. Lastly, the night vision mode and night vision applications of cholesteric displays are also presented.

Dynamic simulation requires the computationally expensive calculation of joint accelerations, while in kinematic simulation these accelerations are known based on a given trajectory. This paper describes a hybrid kinematic and dynamic simulation method that can be applied to the simulation of a quadruped standing leap to speed up the computations over that of a dynamic simulation. This is possible because much of the time, the legs of the standing leap are in the air and their trajectories are directly specified and tightly controlled. The method is more flexible than dynamic simulation alone because it allows joints to be either motion-controlled or force-controlled. It is general to all robotic systems with tree structures, and fully motion-controlled or force-controlled kinematic loops. It should work best for machines with appendages that are motion-controlled, such as those encountered in underwater and space manipulation.

Materials scientists and engineers are still trying to improve on a 2,000-year old technology — paper. The latest developments promise to improve flat-panel displays that are to be viewed in ambient light, like books and newspapers.

Abstract We report a unique eight color and black on white surface stabilized reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display. The display prototype is a triple stack, 100 dpi, 1/8 VGA, which shows eight vivid colors without parallax. The display is bistable so no power is used to show the image between user updates.

It becomes harder and harder to judge a paper by its title. This paper is about Displays. But what does that really define? Not very much, I'm afraid - because Displays mean different things to different people. Right now for example, because of the wide spread interest in elec-tronic watches and hand-held calcula-tors, Displays often conjures up visions of Liquid Crystals and LED's (Light Emitting Diodes). On the other hand, a recent book entitled "Data Display Systems", by W. Gray Horton, turned out to be about various wall charts. Several years ago, a Display paper may have been discussing NIXIE tubes, or projection digit displays, or el?ctroluminescent panel displays, or light valves, or SOLARI "flapper" displays. However, many times when Displays are mentioned, one is really thinking about cathode ray tube systems, and that's what this paper is about.
