This study explored the effect of COVID-related stressors on full-time faculty job satisfaction in a sample of Alabama community colleges. This research is important because while community college enrollments have increased, retaining qualified faculty continues to prove difficult amidst baby boomer retirements or faculty leaving the profession altogether. A quantitative approach was used to survey 216 full-time faculty in 2022 representing seven colleges in the central region of Alabama measuring various COVID work stressors as predictors of overall job satisfaction. COVID work stressors, COVID-related student stressors, and COVID-motivated career change considerations significantly predicted global job satisfaction, explaining 36% of the variance. The evidence from this study suggests that despite the average faculty member reporting they were slightly satisfied with their job nearly three years after the pandemic’s outbreak, COVID-related problems continue to be a concern for both students and faculty. The pandemic exacerbated many preexisting issues in faculty work with regard to student under-preparedness or overreach in administrative oversight, leading to over a third of faculty in this sample considering a career change.

Abstract This paper examines whether there is a presence of behavioral consistency in CEOs' earnings management decisions. Based on insights from the career imprint theory, we propose that firms are more likely to engage in earnings management when their newly appointed CEOs come from firms that were also involved in such practices. Empirical support was found by analyzing a dataset that tracks 855 CEO transitions. Additionally, we find that the strength of this effect is influenced by factors such as the age of the CEO when they joined their previous firm, the length of their tenure at the previous firm, the size of the former firm, and the strength of corporate governance in their current firm. Furthermore, additional tests support the idea of “moral cleansing” behavior in CEOs, but not the “slippery slope” mechanism.

Entomology professors were “fighting” among themselves about eradication 40 years ago, when I was an undergraduate in college. As a naive country boy, I found it difficult to understand why a group of well educated scientists could not agree, at least semantically if not philosophically, on what eradication was and its place in the overall management of pests. As our entomological as well as other biological, knowledge has increased during the last 40 years, along with technology—the ability to use our knowledge for the benefit of man—the intensity of the controversy over eradication seems to have increased. After 40 years of involvement in entomology, I admit that I am still a naive country boy; I still do not understand why the controversy rages on.
