Roe and Holland have suggested that interest categories are ordered in a circular configuration and felt that this model would be helpful in explaining changes in vocational behavior. Spatial configuration analysis has confirmed that the internal structural relationships of scales from several different interest inventories are similar and do conform to the circular ordering proposed by Roe and Holland. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to acquaint readers with Tryon's spherical analysis and show that spatial configuration analysis is a special case of Tryon's method and (b) to determine if items from ACT's Vocational Interest Profile conform to previous results obtained from a spatial configuration analysis of the VIP Scales. Spherical analysis confirmed the ordering effect of items for males, but a U-shaped configuration instead of a circular one was found. Results for females were difficult to interpret and suggest that women did not respond to the items in the same manner as males. Different theories of career choice may prove necessary for males and females. Results of previous spatial configuration analysis need to be reanalyzed at an item level to determine if previous findings with scales are due to an artifact.
