Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Infrared Sounder Constellations have gained significant attention in recent years for their capability to provide precise measurements of Earth's atmospheric properties. Two commonly employed technologies for these constellations are interferometers and diffraction grating spectrometers. This paper presents a comparison of the performance of interferometers and diffraction grating spectrometers for LEO infrared sounder constellations, specifically examining their application in moisture sounding, temperature sounding, and trace gas measurements. We consider the impact of noise, radiometric and spectral calibration, thermal requirements, field of view limitations, and size, weight, and power. The objective is to provide an understanding of the strengths and limitations of each technology, aiding the selection of the most suitable instrument technology for specific mission requirements.
