BackgroundPrimary care-based behavior change obesity treatment has long featured the Calorie restriction (CC), portion control approach. By contrast, the MyPlate-based obesity treatment approach encourages eating more high-satiety/high-satiation foods and requires no calorie-counting. This report describes study methods of a comparative effectiveness trial of CC versus MyPlate. It also describes baseline findings involving demographic characteristics and their associations with primary outcome measures and covariates, including satiety/satiation, dietary quality and acculturation.MethodsA comparative effectiveness trial was designed to compare the CC approach (n = 130) versus a MyPlate-based approach (n = 131) to treating patient overweight. Intervenors were trained community health workers. The 11 intervention sessions included two in-home health education sessions, two group education sessions, and seven telephone coaching sessions. Questionnaire and anthropometric assessments occurred at baseline, 6- and 12 months; food frequency questionnaires were administered at baseline and 12 months. Participants were overweight adult primary care patients of a federally qualified health center in Long Beach, California. Two measures of satiety/satiation and one measure of post-meal hunger comprised the primary outcome measures. Secondary outcomes included weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, dietary quality, sugary beverage intake, water intake, fruit and vegetable fiber intake, mental health and health-related quality of life. Covariates included age, gender, nativity status (U.S.-born, not U.S.-born), race/ethnicity, education, and acculturation.AnalysisBaseline characteristics were compared using chi square tests. Associations between covariates and outcome measures were evaluated using multiple regression and logistic regression.ResultsTwo thousand eighty-six adult patients were screened, yielding 261 enrollees who were 86% Latino, 8% African American, 4% White and 2% Other. Women predominated (95%). Mean age was 42 years. Most (82%) were foreign-born; 74% chose the Spanish language option. Mean BMI was 33.3 kg/m2; mean weight was 82 kg; mean waist circumference was 102 cm. Mean blood pressure was 122/77 mm. Study arms on key baseline measures did not differ except on dietary quality and sugary beverage intake. Nativity status was significantly associated with dietary quality.ConclusionsThe two treatment arms were well-balanced demographically at baseline. Nativity status is inversely related to dietary quality.Trial registrationNCT02514889, posted on 8/4/2015.

A key adaptation in insects for dealing with variable environmental conditions is the ability to diapause. The tiger swallowtail butterflies, Papilio glaucus and P. canadensis are ideal species to explore the genetic causes and population genetic consequences of diapause because divergence in this trait is believed to be a salient factor in maintaining a hybrid zone between these species. Yet little is known about the factors that influence diapause induction in this system. Here we explored how spatial (latitudinal), environmental (temperature) and genetic (hybridization) factors affect diapause induction in this system. Specifically, a series of growth chamber experiments using wild caught individuals from across the eastern United States were performed to: (1) evaluate how critical photoperiod varies with latitude, (2) isolate the stage in which induction occurs, (3) test whether changes in temperature affected rates of diapause induction, and (4) explore how the incidence of diapause is affected in hybrid offspring. We find that induction occurs in the larval stage, is not sensitive to a relatively broad range of temperatures, appears to have a complex genetic basis (i.e., is not simply a dominant trait following a Mendelian inheritance pattern) and that the critical photoperiod increases by 0.4 h with each increasing degree in latitude. This work deepens our understanding of how spatial, environmental and genetic variation influences a key seasonal adaptation (diapause induction) in a well-developed ecological model system and will make possible future studies that explore how climatic variation affects the population dynamics and genetics of this system.

The current study used citation data and relied on network analysis to determine centrality scores for 24 communication journals and the authors of their publications during the years 2007---2011. Scores were used to rank journals and authors across the discipline. The results of centrality rankings reveal that Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Communication Research Reports, Human Communication Research, and Communication Studies are the central most journals in the citation network. Across these 24 journals, the top 1 % of central most scholars are presented in rank based on the placement of their publications. An additional list ranks the 14 central most (1 %) of scholars who published in the five central most journals. These centrality rankings for the journals and authors are discussed in comparison to previous ranking methods. The results for the central most journals mirror the findings of other network analysis research relying on various citation data. However, the findings for author centrality rankings revealed that traditional methods (e.g., summing total publications) for ranking communication scholars yield drastically different results when compared to centrality rankings (incorporating breadth of publications across journals). Future attempts to situate prolific authors should consider the conceptual utility of relying on network analysis methods to analyze citation data. The limitations of this study are also discussed.

Several factors contribute to a disproportionately lower Latino participation in college education. Foremost among those factors are policies that encourage quick job placement over career development, lack of understanding of the benefits of a college degree, lower expectations for Latino students, poor financial planning, and lack of guidance. A review of the literature shows that the strong work ethic imbued by Latino culture correlates with negative outcomes in college enrollment and completion. Therefore, intervention is required to create positive outcomes. Using Upward Bound as a model for intervention, several types of intervention and their effects are suggested and examined.

Results of an environmental assessment conducted in a newly emergent focus of murine typhus in southern California are described. Opossums, Didelphis virginiana Kerr, infested with cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis Buché, in the suburban area were abundant. Animal and flea specimens were tested for the DNA of two flea-borne rickettsiae, Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia felis. R. felis was commonly detected in fleas collected throughout this area while R. typhi was found at a much lower prevalence in the vicinity of just 7 of 14 case-patient homes identified. DNA of R. felis, but not R. typhi, was detected in renal, hepatic, and pulmonary tissues of opossums. In contrast, there were no hematologic polymerase chain reaction findings of R. felis or R. typhi in opossums, rats, and cats within the endemic area studied. Our data suggest a significant probability of human exposure to R. felis in the area studied; however, disease caused by this agent is not recognized by the medical community and may be misdiagnosed as murine typhus using nondiscriminatory serologic methods.

A pilot‐scale pipe loop test was conducted to evaluate the effects of desalinated seawater on corrosion, lead release, disinfectant decay, and formation of disinfection by‐products in the distribution system. Results indicated that the desalinated blend water did not increase corrosion of unlined cast‐iron pipes, coated cement‐lined pipes, or copper pipes. However, aluminum release from uncoated cement‐lined pipes was increased. The blend water also increased lead release from leaded solder. These results agreed with the predictions from corrosion indexes and earlier bench‐scale testing. Orthophosphate (1 mg/L) added to mitigate lead release was ineffective. Adding phosphate increased bacterial growth in unlined cast‐iron pipes and solder. Although chloramine decay was increased by desalinated water, this effect can be managed by controlling bromide levels and either reboosting or preforming chloramine. Desalinated blend water did not increase biological activity. In addition, the blend water decreased the formation of total trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids as expected but increased nitrosodimethylamine for unknown reasons.

Abstract This paper is a case study on the use of a simulation based reservoir evaluation method that led to the drilling of a new well in a seemingly semi depleted steam flooded part of a Fault Block in the Wilmington Field, California. Observations made on this well led to the initiation of a very progressive re-development plan for the area. Information generated from the study should be of significant help for re-development of countless similar field operations that have undergone prior thermal flooding. The City of Long Beach (City) and Tidelands Oil Production Company (Tidelands) drilled and completed a post-steamflood horizontal producing well, UP-957, into the D1 sands of the Fault Block II-A Tar Zone (Tar II-A) in the Wilmington Field, California in March 2004. The well was directionally drilled along the top and most updip structural position of the D1 Sands. The well penetrated the oil-depleted steam chest interval in the main steamflood area and was completed in a relatively immature steamflood area into the highest remaining oil saturated sands in the Tar II-A. The completion interval was selected based on a 3-D deterministic reservoir simulation model with thermal capabilities developed as part of a United States Department of Energy Class III Reservoir project. Prior to this operation, the developed model was successfully used to convert the Tar II-A steamflood operation to a post-steamflood operation. The model employed a flank cold-water injection strategy between two faults to increase and maintain reservoir pressures to prevent steam chest collapse and surface subsidence1. Well UP-957 produced at a peak initial oil rate of 249 BOPD and 723 barrels of gross fluid at a wellhead temperature of 197°F and a pumping fluid level of 2122 ft over the mid-perforation depth of 2403 ft VSS (vertical subsea depth), confirming the potential shown by the model. Since the initial response, the oil rate has declined to 130 BOPD and 1991 BGFPD after nine months of production.
